The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Liar, Liar Pants on Fire Ever lied to anyone? No? I guess that makes you a liar. Come on, sooner or later everyone tells a lie - regardless if they define it, justify it, or excuse it. Does lying make us idiots? But first a little lesson for those of you who want to learn something from this month’s blahing of mine. Why do people lie? j 21% cover a mistake or misdeed. j 16% to gain some economic advantage over others. j 15% personal advantage benefits beyond money. j 14% avoidance, or to escape responsibility or truth. j 8% self-impression; to look good to others. One more quickie - the biggest category of liars is between the ages of 18-44. Had enough? I have. Some real-life examples - some of which you might be familiar with: j I’m sure we could go on for pages about Watergate, but if you were alive then, you don’t need me to remind you of the chaos; and if you weren’t alive, you probably don’t give a rip. j A question - do politicians lie? That’s all I’ll say. j About 100 years ago, some members of the Chicago White Sox baseball team accepted a bribe to throw the World Series. This became a real cluster . . . because of the denial and lies which followed. j How about Lance Armstrong? So, let me ask you - do you think the ongoing pain of lying is more costly or detrimental than the pain of telling the truth? Lied about something in the past you regret? Living one now? I’m guilty, as I believe we all are. I remember applying for my first job and lying about having a college degree. I got the job, but the subject came up again and again for a few years. In hindsight, it wasn’t worth it. By the way - Have a safe, happy, and joyous holiday season, and my very best wishes to each of you for a prosperous and healthy 2018! I mean it - I’m not lying.
