thing else on-site, are just a tool. Every drilling fluid manufacturer has mud en- gineers wi l l ing and able to help you learn more about their products, contact them! Even though there is a cost for drilling fluids, this will save you time and money at the end of the day. There is wear and tear on your tooling which can be reduced by running a quality drilling fluid sys- tem. Let’s take a moment and talk about the differences between water well drilling and horizontal directional drilling. For a water well, you need to clean the borehole to accept a casing and possibly a screen, add gravel pack if it’s not an open hole rock construction, and grout casing in. So, your fluid needs to clean the hole completely and hold it open so you can construct the well. What about cable tool drilling, can drilling fluids help this? They drill a little bit then pound a piece of pipe down. Nothing beats steel wall cake! If they are in a formation that’s unconsolidated and wants to keep falling in, it could cause issues. Bentonite could help stabilize the area. What about clay balling up on the bit reducing the penetration rate? How about running a polymer that helps keep the clay from swelling and maybe a surfactant to take the stickiness out of it? With horizontal direc- tional drilling, all the properties are different. Now we are trying to create a slurry which is displaceable to accept whatever we are trying to place under the surface - be it cable, conduit, monitoring system, util- ities, or whatever. The reason for the use of the products are the same, but the purpose of the fluid is different. Next month, we are going to explore some of the products available. Thanks for reading and go forth drilling prof- itably! The statements and comments in this article are based on information and references believed to be true and fac- tual. R & R Trucking, Inc., with its group of carriers, AATCO and NEI, is North America’s largest trucking company specializing in the trans- port of sensitive cargo. To handle its projected sales growth, the company is adding equip- ment and team truck drivers. Accord- ing to Kevin McKelvy, R & R vice president of administration, "Driver hires were up last year, and we are well positioned to add as many driver teams as necessary to handle increased capacity this year." The WWDR camera caught up with Kevin McKelvy and David Leidy at the recent International Society of Explosives Engineers Conference. 52 JUNE 2017 WorldWide Drilling Resource ®
