doesn’t know what a wheel bearing is, and what to do if the temperature was too high. Just because we can get the infor- mation, doesn’t mean we should. In an article entitled “Big Data, Big Blunders” ( Wall Street Journal , March 10, 2013) the writer states, “Companies are finding that big data doesn't necessarily trans- late into easy success.” The writer cites five mistakes companies often make when it comes to information (data) management. I’ll paraphrase the first three here: 1. Data for data’s sake. We gather data because we can, not because we should. 2. What do we do with the data we have? If there is no clear application or advantage to the data gathered, why do we spend the time and money to com- pile it? 3. If the data isn’t organized, we might as well not have it. There’s no sense in having data if you cannot find it when you need it. On a practical level, unnecessary data requires more memory to contain the data, more software to manage the data, and more power (electrical energy) to deal with the data. This “complexity curve” is not a linear function. It’s exponential with a doubling of data volume requiring at least 4 times the resources to deal with the data. Anybody can “pile on” one more and more levels of complexity. Making the maximum functionality out of the minimum components takes real skill.
