Through the Back Door! by Jim Kuebelbeck Unbelievable Part 2 . . . “I hired you to get me 25 gallons a minute and you didn't do that.” “Henry,” I said, “What do you mean? Are you serious? Fifteen gallons a minute is about 22,000 gallons a day. You can't be serious. You now have enough water for your house and all of your cattle besides. You can't be serious. You've been struggling along rationing your one-gallon-a-minute well for six years, and now you have 15 gallons a minute. You should be on your knees thanking God. What are you saying?” He responded, “You're not going to tell me how much water I need for my cattle.” I told him I grew up on a dairy farm and knew a little bit about what I was telling him. I told him if he wouldn't believe what I was saying, he should call the drilling con- tractor and see what he had to say. I was sure the drilling professional would tell him the same thing I was trying to tell him. “A 15-gallon-a-minute well on your farm is a great well,” I told him. “Don't you tell me what to think,” he said, “This well is no good, and I'm going to keep using my old well!” “Henry,” I said, “Listen to yourself. You're telling me a 15-gallon-a-minute well is no better than your old well which produces only a gallon a minute?” “That's exactly what I'm telling you,” he said. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He wouldn't listen to me. There was no way I could convince him that he now had a good water well on his property. In total frustration, I finally told him to talk to some- one much smarter than me for advice, and ended the unbelievable conversation. I immediately called the drilling contractor and told him I had just talked to “Henry”. “Oh yeah,” he said, “he's quite a character, but you don't know the half of it. After I got him the greatest water supply in the neighborhood, he told me he was- n't satisfied and needed more water than that. I told him he now had all the water he would ever need, but he wouldn't listen to me. And guess what? He then insisted I drill two more holes at random, way out in his pasture. Both of them came up total- ly dry. Like you, I don't know if the guy is thinking straight. Do you know he only has 35 head of cattle? I spent three interesting days out there, I'll tell you. I talked to his wife earlier today and told her I was going to run a temporary line aboveground and tie the new well into their existing water line so they could try it for 60 days, just to prove to them what a good well they now have. She convinced Henry to agree, and I'm hooking it up tomorrow morning. I really believe the well will do more than 20 gallons a minute! Jim, I guess we never know what kind of unbelievable situations we're going to run into, do we?” The well is now in use, and as yet we have not heard another word from Henry or his wife. Such is the life of a modern- day water dowser. The statements and comments in this article are based on information and references believed to be true and fac- tual.
