Alert Construction Crew Key to Incredible Discovery Compiled by Bonnie Love, Editor, WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Construction workers in Colorado made a remarkable discovery while drilling at a Thornton construction site. On Friday, August 25, while working on the site of the city’s new Public Safety facility, crews working for Saunders Construction struck an immovable object, and a crew member realized the object may very well be a fossil. Work was stopped immediately while they contacted the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. By Monday, Joe Sertich, curator of dinosaurs at the museum con- firmed the discovery. After clearing away some of the dirt at the site, Sertich said the fossil appears to be a triceratops skeleton and skull. “This is probably one of only three skulls of triceratops found along the Front Range area,” he added. According to Sertich, most fossils in the area are from the Ice Age, a mere 10 to 12 thousand years ago. This fossil is significantly older. “This dinosaur has been laying here for at least 66 million years,” Sertich stated. “I’m over the moon right now about this dinosaur fossil.” The Denver Basin is no stranger to dinosaur fossils. The area, which stretch- es from Colorado Springs to Wyoming, contains ancient silt, mud, and rocks from the Rocky Mountain range formation which buried dinosaur remains from more than 66 million years ago. Over the past 30 years, quite a few bones have been uncovered, including triceratops bones. However, “It’s pretty unusual to get full skeletons,” said Sertich. Construction work has stopped in the area where the fossil was discov- ered to give scientists time to stabilize ! " # !
