The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Miguel Ruiz said: “If others tell us something, we make assumptions; and if they don't tell us something, we make assumptions to fulfill our need to know and to replace the need to communicate. Even if we hear something and we don't understand, we make assumptions about what it means, and then believe the assumptions. We make all sorts of assumptions because we don't have the courage to ask questions.” I thought this month I would discuss a really stupid topic many people (idiots) are guilty of - and it is assumptions. The longer quote above is by one of my favorite authors who really helps us get the stick out of our own eye when it comes to life and reality. The second one, well, he’s not a poet or thought-provoking author, but this one line says it all. What are assumptions? I could go on for pages with really dumb definitions, but since I’m a simple guy I’ll give you mine. It’s thinking and even believing some- thing is true because we want it to be or believe it should be according to our agen- das, beliefs, or expectations. Here’s my challenge to you this month - or how about just today. How many assumptions do you think you will make as you go through a normal day? Let me give you just 12: • You go to bed at night and assume you will wake up about six hours later. • You eat breakfast and assume the food will not kill you. • You drive to work, and as you travel 70 miles per hour down a two-lane road you assume the traffic coming at you will not change lanes and hit you head on. • As you go through your day, you assume your heart will give you the 4500 beats every hour you need to stay alive. • You assume as you read this article your brain will interpret it, keep working, and not shut down. • You assume the earth will continue to rotate and travel around the sun at the same speed and angle. “Billy Bob why would I care about this?” you may ask. Well dude, if either of these are altered by less than one mile per hour or one degree of angle, we are all toast. We’re only halfway there - so how are we doing so far? Made any of these assumptions? • Assume a customer who says a check is in the mail actually mailed the check. • Your spouse said they would call you later will actually make the call. • Had your boss tell you they want to meet with you later in the day and made some kind of an assumption about what it was about? • Had one of your kids tell you they would be late coming home from a date because they had to meet their date’s parents and assumed the worst? • All conflict in any relationship can be brought back to an assumption one, both, or all of you had. • You made a deposit into your bank account and assumed you would have access to the money. Well that’s it. Want to wager you made at least half of these 12 assumptions today? And how many more do you think, and are making right now as you read this, you will before the day is over? So, what’s my point with this rather stupid discussion? Let me answer this stupid question with a stupid answer - I know some of these and the hundreds if not thousands we could discuss might seem stupid - well, isn’t the point of this article stupid stuff?
