Through the Back Door! by Jim Kuebelbeck Just about the time I think I have encountered every pos- sible situation in my work as a water dowser, along comes some- thing that makes me realize there is no limit to the unpredictable actions of human behavior. Several months ago, a landowner called to ask if I might be able to help locate a water supply on his property. “I've got a real problem, and I don't know what to do,” he said. “We live by a lake, and winter is coming, and we're totally out of water.” Assuming his well had gone dry for some reason, I asked if this happened sud- denly or if the well had gradually diminished over time. “I'll say it happened suddenly,” he replied. “Here's the situation, if you can believe it or not. For all the years my wife and I lived here, we've gotten our water supply from a farm well about a thousand feet away. The nearest neighbor beyond our property is also tied into our water line. Because of all the problems locating good wells in this area, we and our neighbors have always gotten our water from this farm well. The farm originally belonged to my parents who passed away recently, and my two sisters subsequently inherited the farm. I myself inherited the lakeshore property adjacent to the farm. Now that lakeshore property values have gone up considerably in recent years, my sisters have come to the conclusion my property is now worth more than what they inher- ited, and it created some major jealousy on their part. “Two weeks ago, my sisters suddenly shutoff the water to both of our proper- ties, and told us we'd have to drill our own wells! Unfortunately, my parents never put anything like a 'legal easement' into writing about our continued use of water from the farm well, and we never considered the possibility we'd ever have this kind of problem. “Our neighbor did manage to drill a marginal well last week that might get them by, but my wife and I have been hauling water in five-gallon jugs every day just to wash dishes and flush the toilet. Two days ago, I had a well [drilling contractor] come out and he drilled a deep dry hole on our property; and now we don't know what to do. We have to do something before winter sets in. We can't live here without a water supply. We're now doing our laundry in town, but I've got one unhappy wife here. The well [drilling contractor] told us to call you, because you had helped him locate water in other similar situations in the past.” I told the homeowner we’d do our best to try to help him, but could only find what God had already put there. He said he’d be forever grateful if we found a good well on his property. We arrived at his lakeshore property early the next morning, and discovered what we considered to be a promising drilling site. It was uncomfortably close to his previously drilled dry hole, but it was the only live-water flow we could sense on the entire property. Three days later, the owner called to tell us a great water supply was encountered at 70 feet, and the excavators were al ready in the process of installing the water line from the well to their home! At Christmas we received a letter from the landowner and his wife, which read in part, “Just wanted to tell you that we will never forget you. You have a place in our hearts!” (No mention was made about his jealous sisters.)
