WorldWide Drilling Resource

30 FEBRUARY 2019 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Since we are several weeks into a new year, I thought I would discuss a somewhat uncomfortable topic this month - the issue of aging. Now keep in mind, I get it - we all are going to get old and die one day. And yes, better than a third of the U.S. population is over 60 years old. And yes, you - one day, if you are not there yet - will be too. The real question I would like to pose is simply: Just because we are old, does it mean we have to act old? A few things to consider when it comes to stupid people getting old: Health - We are all wearing out little by little every day and every year. If you’ve made it to your senior years and can still, hear, talk, walk, think, and even you know ___, then go for it, because trust me, you are going to lose a lot of it before you leave here. Relationships - If you are divorced, single, or widowed, I feel your pain as the question keeps coming up. Am I too old to date?? Well, if you have to keep asking yourself this question, then yes you are. Retirement - Retire………….m……..en……..t…….. it’s hard for me to even say this word. The only people who retire happily are those folks who have hated their jobs or careers while they were working. Get it? If you love what you do, why would you want to stop doing it to play golf three times a day for the rest of your life? Duh. Money - If you have reached the age of 60 or even 50 plus, trust me - don’t rely on your 401(k), Social Security, or Medicare to keep you happy or even alive. Better have a “safety net”, and I suggest cash. Yes, gold is worth a lot, but let me ask you, if things crash and burn, can you fill your gas tank and pay for it with gold coins? Careers - Careers should be more than just working. They should give your life a sense of meaning and value. If this is true and you stop, where are you going to get these from? Time - We are all running out of time. No one can save it or get more of it. So let me be frank. You have no guarantee you are going to get another day, so I suggest you live today as if it were your last day. To stay young at heart is not about a number, but the ability to laugh, smile, have fun, and just enjoy. Trust me, on average, I am thrown out of at least one restaurant, the post office, and a gas station at least once a week. Seriously, my nickname within a 20-mile radius in most public businesses is “Trouble”. What’s your nickname - old man, codger, or something worse?
