Are You Up for the Geothermal Challenge? Adapted from Information by the U.S. Department of Energy The American-Made Challenges are a series of prize competitions, in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), designed to spur the nation's entrepreneurs and reassert American leadership in the energy marketplace. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced it is funding $3.25 million for theAmerican- Made Geothermal Manufacturing Prize, a first of its kind for the geothermal industry. The competition will focus on additive manufacturing, better known as 3-D printing, and address manufacturing challenges associated with operating in harsh geothermal environ- ments including high temperatures, rock compressive strengths, and free gas elements. It will consist of four progressive competitions - Concept, Design, Prototyping, and Testing. “Additive manufacturing is such a promising technology for so many industries, and this American-Made prize will help ensure that, through innovation, the American geother- mal industry will continue to lead the world,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette. “By creating incentives for new approaches to device design, this prize will help unlock the full potential of geothermal power as a clean, reliable, affordable energy source for American homes and businesses.” Eligible competitors include entrepreneurs; members of a team working within a company; university students and faculty; small business owners; researchers at DOE National Laboratories; or anyone based in the U.S. with the desire to bring an impactful solution in this area to reality. Participants will compete for cash prizes, as well as vouch- ers to leverage the capabilities and expertise of the American-Made Network. The combi- nation of funding with the mentoring, training, and other services from the American-Made Network, supports long-term success for participants and growth in U.S. manufacturing. The Geothermal Prize is led by the DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Geothermal Technologies Office and Advanced Manufacturing Office, and will be administered by the NREL in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory on the American-Made Challenges platform. The contest will be open for submissions April 20, 2020, and the deadline for submissions will be July 20, 2020.
