An underground utility line is damaged every six minutes nationwide because someone decided to dig without calling 811 first. The Common GroundAlliance (CGA) is the association dedicated to protecting underground utility lines and the safety of people who dig near them. Digging without knowing the approx- imate location of underground utilities can result in damage to gas, electric, commu- nications, water and sewer lines, which leads to service disruptions, serious in- juries, and costly repairs. There are more than 20 million miles of underground utilities in the United States, which equates to more than 105 yards of buried utilities for every man, woman, and child in the U.S. The process is simple: 1. Call 811 from anywhere in the country a few days prior to digging or drilling. Your call will automatically be routed to your local one call center. 2. Give the operator information about how to contact you, where you are planning to dig, and what type of work you will be doing. 3. Utility companies with potential facilities in the area of your dig site will be notified about your intent to dig or drill. 4. Within 2-3 working days, each affected utility company will send a locator to mark the approximate lo- cation of your underground utility lines. 5. Manually dig around the marks carefully. Calling 811 is the easiest way to make sure you are doing your part to keep communities safe. By calling 811 before digging, you have less than a 1% chance of striking a buried utility line.
