Flyrock, misfires, and toxic fumes have lead to several fatalities since 2010. Following manufacturers’ guidelines for the storage, handling, trans- portation, and use of explosives is one of the many recommended best practices. Other recommended safety procedures for explosives include: ) Keeping all explosive storage areas clean, dry, and organized. ) Rotating the inventory of explosive materials so the oldest stock is used first. ) Never using damaged or deteriorated explosive materials, including initiation (detonating) devices, boosters, dynamite, and blasting agents. If damaged, deteriorated, or outdated explosives are discovered, the explosives manufacturer should be contacted. ) Ensuring every location where explosives are stored or used is properly ven- tilated before miners enter. ) Utilizing modern technology such as face profilers and borehole probes to gather specific details about areas of weak burden and potential borehole devia- tion. ) Communicating with the drill operator and understanding the geology of the blast site. ) Reviewing and following the site-specific blast plan prior to loading any ex- plosives. Develop a drill pattern appropriate for the location, and adjust stemming depth and/or decking to maintain adequate burden for the blast. ) Establish the blast area and remove all persons from the area before the blast is fired. ) Guard or barricade all access routes to the blast area to prevent people and vehicles from entering. ) Before firing a blast, give ample warning to allow everyone to be evacuated from the blast area. ) Conduct a post-blast inspection to be certain the blast area is safe before anyone reenters. It is vital for all mine operators, independent contractors, and miners to follow strict explosives safety procedures to prevent fatalities. Following these best practices will allow your jobsite to remain safe for workers and the general public. EXB WWDR photo. 45 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® AUGUST 2020
