Three exploration wells will be drilled in the project area. This long-awaited milestone was spearheaded by independent energy company Tulu Moye Geothermal Operations (TMGO) and Reykjavík Geothermal. Drilling marks the beginning of a new 150 MW (megawatt) geothermal power plant in Ethiopia, with the first phase expected to be complete by 2023. Initially, a 50-MW plant will be constructed with plans to expand the plant to 150 MW in the second phase, which should be complete by 2025. The Tulu Moye geothermal project is just part of a larger agreement the company signed with the Ethiopian government to develop at least 1000 MW of geothermal capacity. Like much of the world, Ethiopia has witnessed a greater demand for electricity. In the 2016/17 fiscal year, over 12 billion kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity was gen- erated, twice as much as half a decade ago. In the same period, the capacity of pro- ducing power doubled to 4300 MW. Reykjavik Geothermal, along with its partner, Meridiam, conducted research and feasibility studies on the Tulu Moye, as well as Abaya geothermal sources. Both proj- ects are located in the East African Rift Valley, which has a capacity to produce 15,000 MW of geothermal power. “Beyond increasing power generation, we also know this effort will support the ability of key actors in Ethiopia’s power in- dustry to identify strong, reliable partners in the private sector who can bring expertise, quality, and value to energy projects and infrastructure investment,” said Troy Fitrell, charge d’affaires of the United States Embassy, at the Sheraton Addis ceremony. Ethiopian Electric Power estimates the country could potentially produce up to 10,000 MW of geothermal energy. Tulu Moye drill site for well GA-1. GEO
