Sapropel - A jellylike sludge composed of plant remains, most often algae, putrefying in an anaerobic environment on the shallow bottoms of lakes and seas. It may be a source material of petroleum and natural gas. Saturated - Said of the condition where the pores of a material are filled with a liquid, usually water. Also used to describe a mineral which can form in the presence of free silica, one containing the maximum amount of com- bined silica. Saturation - The degree to which the pores in a rock contain oil, gas, or water, generally expressed in percent of total pore space. The degree to which silica-saturated minerals are present in an igneous rock. Also refers the maximum possible content of water vapor in the earth’s atmosphere for a given temperature. Saussurite - A tough, compact mineral aggregate consisting of a mixture of albite (oligoclase) and zoisite or epidote. It is produced by alteration of calcic plagioclase. Scalenohedron - A closed crystal form whose faces are scalene triangles. A hexagonal scalenohedron has 12 faces and the tetragonal scalenohedron has 8. Scapolite - A group of tetragonal minerals of general formula. Scapolite minerals charac- teristically occur in calcium-rich metamorphic rocks or in igneous rocks as the products of alteration of basic plagioclase feldspars. Scheelite - A brown tetragonal mineral. It is found in pneumatolytic veins associated with quartz and fluoresces to show a blue color. Scheelite is an ore of tungsten. Schist - A metamorphic crystalline rock with a closely foliated structure which can be split along approximately parallel planes. Schorl - Black tourmaline. More terms next month!
