We Should All Recycle Aluminum Cans Compiled by Editorial Staff, WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Many of our favorite beverages are found beneath the tab of an aluminum can. William Coors (grandson of Adolph Coors who founded Coors Brewing in Colorado) pioneered the use of aluminum cans in 1959. This was in answer to an environmental movement in the U.S. to “Ban the Can”, since the cans being used were made of tin and were left littering neighborhoods. Coors felt he was economically forced to find an alternative. His company offered a penny for each returned can - so recycling began. They even developed a continuous casting machine and built a mill in Texas, giving competition to traditional aluminum-producing companies. This amazing metal can be recycled continuously with no loss of quality, making it a true closed-loop recycling process. Aluminum cans are lightweight, stackable, and strong, allowing brands to package and transport more beverages using less material. They are far more valuable than glass or plastic, which helps make municipal recycling programs financially viable by subsidizing the recycling of less valuable materials, thus aluminum cans have a higher recycling rate and more recycled content than competing package types. Also, glass and plastic are typically “down-cycled” into other products like carpet fiber or landfill liner. In 2018, 45.2 billion cans (more than $800 million worth of aluminum) ended up in U.S. landfills - a major loss to the economy and the environment. Making a can from recycled aluminum saves 92% of the energy required to make a new can. Equipment manufacturer, Barbco, Inc. of East Canton, Ohio, recently started a recycling program to benefit ACBC (Aluminum Cans for Burned Children). ACBC helps patients in the Akron Children’s Hospital Burn Center. Do you recycle aluminum cans? If your city doesn’t have can collection, there are organizations which have drop-off donation bins, and even pickup service. Habitat for Humanity locations take aluminum can donations, and Ronald McDonald House Charities collect aluminum can tabs. The energy saved by recycling 100% of aluminum cans could power 4.1 million homes for a full year. 35 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® DECEMBER 2020 ENV Helical Pile Foundation for Boardwalk Trail Adapted from Information by Walder Foundation Products on the CHANCE ® Foundation Solutions Blog Helical piles are gaining notoriety as an ideal foundation solution for many types of trails, boardwalks, and walkways. They are great for areas requiring minimal disturbance to the surrounding environment since installation with relatively small, limited-access equipment lessens the impact on vegetation and the soil. Unlike concrete, helical piles can be immediately loaded with no curing time needed, and can be installed at an angle if necessary for lateral stability. Contractor Stable Foundations recently used 124 CHANCE ® helical piles for a pedestrian and bicycle trail in Ashland, Virginia. Because of a steep embankment along the road, a boardwalk was constructed to connect Carter Park to the existing Ashland Trolley Line Trail. The helical piles support over 1200 linear feet of the ten-foot-wide boardwalk, which was the first in Virginia to be made with Permatrak ® precast concrete sections. The average embedment depth of the piles was 30 feet, and they were spaced ten feet apart for maximum boardwalk support.
