We looked all over The Bahamas and Caribbean for an ideal location that would enable us to create new experiences, while celebrating the culture of this amazing region,” Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Bob Chapek said. Disney completed its purchase of privately owned lighthouse Point last year, and signed an agreement with the govern- ment of The Bahamas which will guide the responsible and sustainable way the site will be developed. The company has committed to develop less than 20% of the property; employ sustainable building practices, including an open-trestle pier to eliminate the need to dredge a ship channel for docking; establish environmental monitoring programs during construction and operation; and donate more than 190 acres of privately owned land to the government. ENCO international was hired to perform geotechnical investigations for the project. Their work of taking core samples of sand and rock in places where structures will be built on land and over the water will determine the most appropriate building techniques to use, pending the acceptance of the Environmental impact Assessment and Environmental management Plan, which also aligns with Disney’s pledge to the environment. “We are committed to maximizing Bahamian participation in this project, and our selection of ENCO for this significant work through a competitive bid process is the result of our ongoing efforts to build relationships with Bahamian companies. To date, we have met with more than 70 companies that have expressed interest in assisting with our construction needs, and we will continue to build relationships with them,” said Jeff Vahle, DCl president. “We will be directly involved in conservation efforts to preserve and protect the environment that creates this beauty, and we will be working with artists of every kind, much like we did with Aulani in Hawaii, to create a unique destination that is rooted in Bahamian culture and imbued with Disney magic,” said Disney imagineer Joe Rohde.
