The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” A Conversation Between Mark Twain and Will Rogers ~ In Today's World Both of these gents have been my heroes for years. Their wisdom, insight, ability to tell it like it was, and their sense of humor will forever be engaging. I thought we would look back on a conversation of theirs and reframe it, dealing with today’s reality. First, read two of my favorite quotes from each of them in the box above. These guys had an amazing impact on the world, and not because of their intelligence, but their wit, humility, passion, and integrity. Here we go: Mark: “Will, how would you describe today’s political climate?” Will: “How much time do you have; or better still, how much patience do you have?” Mark: “Well, you and I go back a long time, so just tell it like it is.” Will: “I have never seen so many idiots in such a small place, get so little done, waste so much time and money, and act like they are worthy of another term.” Mark: “So, I guess you are a little disappointed with what’s being done and why and how.” Will: “Mark, you are supposed to be the sarcastic one of the two of us, what’s your opinion?” Mark: “I said it years ago and nothing has changed, they need to put a fence around Washington, D.C., and call it off limits for anyone with common sense.” Will: “What about the election coming up, any thoughts?” Mark: “If I wasn’t so old, I think I could run for something and win.” Will: “Sorry my friend, with your sarcasm and lack of political correctness, you would set the country and even the world on fire.” Mark: “Can we please talk about something that doesn’t giveme a headache?” Will: “Well, I guess we could talk about your latest book. How’s it coming and what’s the title?” Mark: “The title isFive Reasons Why I Never Got into Politicsand it’s almost finished.” Will: “What are the five reasons?” Mark: “I don’t like spending other people’s money. I don’t trust the media to represent me with integrity. I don’t like people who interrupt me when I start talking. I don’t like being stuck in the same place for four years. I hate compromise that in the end is a no-win for everyone. I hate having to smile all day acting like I like my job.” Will: “That’s six reasons.” Mark: “Oh, I can go on with a lot more if you want me to.” Will: “No, I get your drift. Let’s go have a beer and talk about fishing.” Mark: “Yeah man, now you are talking.” If you have never read any of their books, I urge you to read one of them - it will change your life forever.
