If not, here’s a brief refresher for you. T1 best identifies macroporosity, a measure of the proportion of large pores in the soil, and identifies lighter fluids like gas and light oil. T2 reveals microporosity, very small pores in the soil, and fluids like heavy oil, both in a wide range of rock formations. Now imagine being able to acquire simultaneous T1 and T2 distributions while drilling. Someone did just that and designed the innovative MagniSphere, the first of its kind in the industry. After performing extensive field testing, Schlumberger recently introduced the MagniSphere high-definition NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) logging-while-drilling (LWD) service. Jesus Lamas, president of Well Construction at Schlumberger said, “The service provides operators with automated, high-definition NMR data while drilling, which is used to maximize reservoir exposure and ultimately optimize production.” By using simultaneous measurements of T1 and T2 distribution while drilling, the MagniSphere service delivers real-time petrophysical evaluation information, delivering this to a website in a short turnaround time. The information is then worked into an intelligent processing workflow, helping to understand the wide range of fluid types in a broader range of rock types. Providing operators with reservoir information used in identifying producible hydrocarbon and facilitating precision geosteering, this service ultimately delivers ideal well placement for more productive hydrocarbon extraction from extended-reach wells. A key feature of the MagniSphere is better understanding complex reservoirs’ producibility, flow or no flow. By identifying the optimal location to perforate and produce the most oil while avoiding water, the MagniSphere improves the reservoir model overall. DIR
