Be on the lookout for the Cat® (Connected Worker) in the (Guard) hat! Surface mining operations just became safer, thanks to collaboration between Caterpillar® and Guardhat Inc. A new system, Cat Connected Worker, will use wearables to provide added protection for people. It will also deliver event-based monitoring and mapping, including precise location of all workers to the mine monitoring system. Communication between individuals, teams, and sites will be enabled. Guardhat, a leading industrial IoT (Internet of Things, the network of physical objects connected to the Internet using sofware, sensors, and other technologies) technology company, specializes in wearables, infrastructure, and software platforms for safer work environments. Connected devices in the Guardhat line include hard hats, personnel tags, asset tags, and smartphones, all using Guardhat’s applications. The system’s Wi-Fi makes it cellularcompatible to communicate with the Safety Control Center. All of the wearables are ergonomic and unobtrusive, as well as ruggedized for operation in real-world jobsites. All devices can store information and operate independently. Detachable and rechargeable batteries power the devices, giving at least eight hours or more runtime. Additional battery packs let wearers keep using the system without needing a charger. A range of smart wearables and tags is available. The HCI Communicator is a smart hard hat providing sensor-based awareness of surroundings, real-time positioning, proximity detection, and audiovisual telecommunications. A hands-free device, it can operate with Wi-Fi, cellular networks, or in offline mode. The TA1 Atlas Tag is a clip-on or body-worn device with a touch display. It provides location tracking, audio-visual telecommunications, and other safety features. The HF1 Finder is another smart hard hat providing highprecision, full 3-D location tracking with features specifically for workers’ safety applications. Also hands-free, the HF1 is suitable when the extended capabilities of the HC1 are not required. The Rhea Android app is available for download and installation on compatible Android phones. It provides location, tracking, and core safety features, such as SOS, fall detection, man-down, and proximity detection.
