WorldWide Drilling Resource

29 FEBRUARY 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Latch Back Pressure Valve Saves Lives and Money Adapted from Information by Weir Oil & Gas In December 2020, Weir Oil & Gas, a leading provider of systematized pressure pumping and pressure control equipment and services, announced their new Weir® Latch Back Pressure Valve (LBPV) Drill-Thru System. This innovative unit, available with Weir’s Unitized™ Lock-Ring (ULR) Wellhead and S-29 Lock Ring Wellhead, is more efficient and ensures a safer operating environment for drill-thru operations. Using a unique proprietary latch design, the LBPV avoids damage while running the drill bit through the wellhead. It eliminates damage to the back pressure valve (BPV), reduces nonproductive time (NPT) from stuck drill bits, and minimizes potential pressure integrity problems, effectively protecting personnel and equipment. Due to its streamlined design, the LBPV system simplifies retrieval, replacement, and maintenance. This new system reduces human error and expenses. With a pressure rating of 15,000 psi, the LBPV can be installed easily using a dry rod lubricator or high-tier lubricator to set the plug into place. Operators can be confident the latch will hinge every time, even if wear is present. Not only does the system offer increased reliability and safety, but it is also supported by Weir Edge™ Services. This supports operators with a three-pronged approach, including global access to local engineering experts, engineered repairs with highly skilled aftermarket support, and industry-leading digital environment tools for equipment, all within a three-hour trip. Weir prides itself on working in partnership with their customers to engineer solutions to make operations safer, more efficient, and more sustainable. As a result, some of the greatest challenges drilling engineers face are addressed by the new LBPV system. Paul Coppinger, president of Weir Oil & Gas said, “We engineered our LBPV Drill-Thru System to take the entire drilling operation into account. The latch technology enables drilling crews to improve overall well design cost and well performance - by allowing them to drill deeper and more efficiently, reducing NPT, and mitigating the possibility of a catastrophic pressure event.” G&O Weir® Latch Back Pressure Valve Drill-Thru System.
