The two are not always doled out equally to each of us, but there is a risk-reward ratio that is part of the ebb and flow of life for each of us. Some people go out of their way to avoid any risks whatsoever in life, while others seem to search them out. One thing I learned growing up was to not be afraid of failure, that it was just as much a part of life as success. Don’t get me wrong, success is more fun than failure. One of the critical advantages of failing, if we will choose to see it this way, is that when we fail, we have the option of learning more than when we succeed. The road to success can be filled with disappointment, personal losses, frustrations, death, stress, anxiety, failure, problems, risk, heartache, sacrifice, loneliness, adversity, and letting go of dreams. Not a pretty picture. So why begin the trip? It can also be filled with achievement, satisfaction, joy, happiness, contributing to the lives of others, love, personal growth, friendship, valuable life lessons, recognition, peace, harmony, and freedom. The journey each of us takes, as we travel through life day by day, is our personal statement of the meaning and purpose of our life. We leave behind a legacy of value or of nothingness, and the choice is up to each of us given the variety of decisions, actions, and choices we make along the way. None of us was given a written guarantee at birth we would leave behind any from the above lists. We create our destiny one day and one choice at a time. Don’t die wondering.
