18 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Last month, I decided to see how various organizations were managing the current economic and staffing challenges to ensure they survive and even prosper in the coming months. So, I decided to both interview and observe a variety of managers, business owners, and organization leaders, and I thought as we approach the end of a very challenging year, I would share some of the “idiotic” stuff I heard. These quotes say it all - if you don’t have time or the interest to read what follows. “Civilization begins with order, grows with liberty, and dies with chaos.” ~Will Durant “The battlefield is a scene of constant chaos. The winner will be the one who controls that chaos, both his own and the enemies.” ~Napoleon Bonaparte “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” ~Winston Churchill So, here are a few of the things I heard. And for your information, I didn’t make any of this stuff up . . . it all happened. • One manager, during a staff meeting, openly criticized one of the employees in front of all of the others in the room. • One business owner said they were eliminating the Employee of the Month recognition program because it was taking too much time and was a distraction. • One entrepreneur who had over 100 employees, said they were going to change the yearly employee review process to every other year. • One manager decided employees working remotely were hurting their organization’s performance so they decided everyone had to return to working on-site regardless of their position. • One organization created a new policy that all coffee in all departments was now going to be $.50. • One “so-called” leader recommended himself as the manager of the year to the Board of Directors. • One organization eliminated all in-person training and said everything would be done by Zoom or webinar. Don’t believe some of this stuff???? I can go on for pages, and you wouldn’t believe some of the idiotic things people are doing and saying and then wondering why their business is on shaky ground. Okay, one more that will blow your mind: • One organization changed the working hours to whatever was convenient for everyone. Come in when you can, leave when you want, take lunch breaks as long as you want, etc. = Billy Bob, on the road. Billy Bob Contact him via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com
