APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Railroad Commission Locates Deep Freshwater Aquifer Adapted from Information by the Railroad Commission of Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) geologists identified and mapped a deep aquifer in Texas which could yield appreciable volumes of freshwater in and around Eagle Pass, a semiarid region of the U.S.-Mexico border. The Maverick Basin Aquifer, RRC’s working name, has been located in the Glen Rose Formation, which is more than a mile under the surface in some places. Maverick, Dimmit, and Zavala Counties have deeper water, and Kinney and Uvalde Counties are somewhat shallower. So far, the aquifer is known to be at least 3000 square miles in area and averages about 1000 feet thick in most places. Geologically, the aquifer’s recharge zone is through karsts in the hills 50 miles west of the Rio Grande in Mexico and has no connection with the river. A drilling contractor of a would-be oil well is working with the RRC to obtain permission to convert it to a drinking water well, which is what prompted research by RRC’s Groundwater Advisory Unit (GAU). “It’s because of oil and gas exploration that we found this aquifer, said James Harcourt, manager of the GAU. “The aquifer likely holds sustainable quantities of drinking water. It almost never happens that you have pristine water quality at these depths in these volumes.” RRC’s GAU, which is more than 100 years old, reviews data from operators, academics, government agencies, groundwater conservation districts, and other sources to ensure oilfield activities and well designs are protective of freshwater. The GAU issues groundwater identification reports which must be reviewed by RRC field staff and operators before underground gas and oil engineering operations can be approved. Data from testing the Maverick Basin Aquifer during GAU research showed future water wells could be capable of sustainably producing thousands of gallons of freshwater per day from an individual well with some wells exhibiting artesian flow. The RRC had the water tested by a San Antonio laboratory, and tests show it meets or exceeds federal and state drinking water standards. Most water occurring so deep under the surface of the earth is extremely salty or has other constituents, so this find, initially reported by the drilling contractor, is quite unusual. The GAU is sharing this new water find with the Texas Water Development Board, which oversees the state’s water planning and water availability; the Board will do further research of its own. 8 APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Construction Begins at the University of Alabama Adapted from Information by the U.S. Geological Survey The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is partnering with the University of Alabama (UA) to build a new Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF), a science and engineering facility to support the agency’s water observation networks and research. Construction of the building, located on the northern end of campus, will take place this year. It is expected to be ready for occupancy in 2023. The HIF will support training, repairs, and calibration for hydrological equipment used to monitor streamflow, groundwater, water quality, and other water resource features important to all Americans who rely on water. The HIF will support the greater USGS water resource monitoring and evaluation mission with training and equipment necessary for the comprehensive scientific study of water availability, quality, and quantity. “This partnership wi l l ensure a world-class USGS facility for the testing and development of cutting-edge USGS hydrologic instrumentation, which provides the backbone for our near real-time water monitoring and other research,” said Don Cline, associate director for the USGS Water Mission area. “This information enriches the lives of everyday Americans and is used nationwide by all types of end users, from water managers to recreational boaters, to make critical decisions.” Recognizing the need to replace the current facilities located at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, Congress appropriated $38.5 million to replace the aging buildings with the requirement to collocate with complementary academic and federal partners. UA was selected as the site of the new HIF for the opportunities it provided to coincide with other water-related research and development being conducted on campus, including the National Oceanic C&G USGS + UA continued on page 10.

APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® New International Patent for Barbco, Inc. Barbco, Inc. was granted Patent No. 387289 in Mexico, for the Cutting Assembly for a Boring Device. This is a proud moment in the East Canton, Ohio manufacturer’s 32-year history of driving the trenchless technology, horizontal boring, and underground manufacturing industries forward with world-class equipment and cutting-edge technology. The FlexBor is designed to virtually eliminate frac-outs and inadvertent returns often associated with horizontal directional drilling and the use of bentonite as a slip agent lubricant. The Patent Abstract reads: “An apparatus and method for drilling an underground [borehole] where pressurized air may be used to discharge cuttings produced by a cutting assembly. The cutting assembly includes a shaft having first and second ends and a bore extending between the ends. First and second cutting heads are provided on the shaft a distance apart. The second cutting head is rearward of the first cutting head and is of a greater diameter. Each cutting head defines an air passage therethrough that is in fluid communication with the shaft’s bore. A housing extends rearwardly from the second cutting head and connects to a length of casing. An annular flange, concentric with the housing, seals the borehole as the cutting assembly rotates and moves forward through the ground. Cuttings generated by the assembly are moved therethrough and discharged from the casing by pressurized air provided to the assembly through the shaft’s bore.” For a link to this website, visit this page at: worldwidedrillingresource.com

APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Environmental Monitoring by Thomas Kwader, Ph.D., P.G. Owner, Qwater Well Developer and WorldWide Drilling Resource® Hydrogeologist Algae Blooms - A Threat to Our Surface and Groundwaters I have lived most of my life in Florida and have seen our surface and groundwater resources degrade greatly in quality over the last 50 years. Our streams, rivers, and lakes have become toxic to many forms of aquatic life and vegetation, which has resulted in large-scale killing of plants, fishes, mammals such as manatees, game fish, and birds. The wide misuse of toxic chemicals and nutrients (fertilizers) have grossly upset the natural balance of plant and animal life in our streams, rivers, bays, the Gulf of Mexico, and groundwater. These toxic conditions are a result of misuse, excessive use, and ignorance of the complex effects of these chemicals. Their use, intended to fix one problem, can often cause a chain reaction affecting a wide range of plants and other naturally occurring biota upsetting natural biologic systems. Fortunately, many natural systems are resilient to low and moderate stress introduced by man-made activities. However, prolonged exposure and accumulation of those chemicals and nutrients can easily “overwhelm” natures’ ability to dilute, biodegrade, and destroy the cocktails of chemicals and nutrients accumulating in these once pristine environments. The theory that if a low level of a certain herbicide, pesticide, or nutrient seems to work, then a higher dose will work faster and last longer - often leads to disastrous results. To protect and preserve our groundwater and surface resources for us and future generations, we MUST begin to limit our usage of herbicides, pesticides, nutrients, and other chemicals that are bioaccumulating in our surface water, groundwater, and soils. We need to better understand and take responsibility for all of the side effects of the overuse of these chemicals. Tom Tom Kwader may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com ENV and Atmospheric Administration’s National Water Center. The 95,000-square-foot, two-story facility will include a hydraulics lab, water quality labs, field testing facilities, environmental chambers, sensor innovation space, warehouse, training labs, network operations center, and administrative offices. Unique features of the hydraulics lab will include a tilting flume and test basin for simulating river and stream processes and a 350-foot-long tow tank and carriage, which will provide a national water velocity standard for calibrating field instrumentation. 12 APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® 3 Smart Reasons to Use an Irrigation Water Flow Meter Adapted from an Article by Katie Englin, Agricultural Irrigation Specialist, Seametrics Smart irrigation practices include using precise irrigation tools and good management decisions for proper irrigation scheduling, applying water to crops at the exact frequency and amounts needed. This involves studying, understanding, applying, then monitoring and controlling essential instruments such as soil moisture probes and flow meters to ensure efficient use of energy and water in crop production is achieved. Proper irrigation scheduling minimizes the waste of water and nutrients, supporting conservation while maximizing crop yields. How do you know when to apply water? How much water should you apply? You can’t manage what you don’t measure, making the flow meter an integral component of an efficient irrigation system. Three reasons why using an irrigation flow meter is a smart business practice: 1. Improves crop quality and increases yields - Today, virtually every input on a farm is measured from electricity and fertilizer, to pesticides and runoff. It makes sense to measure how much irrigation water is being used. Using the right amount of water, at the right time and in the right place, can improve crop quality, reduce energy and fertilizer costs, minimize topsoil erosion, and increase yields. 2. Determine pump efficiency and quickly identify irrigation system problems to save money - Any time the pump is on, water is moving and costs are being incurred. When variable speed drives are used, costs can include both fuel and electricity. As a management tool, a flow meter can help find the best efficiency point for a system; saving fuel and ensuring the pump is running at optimal rates, reducing costly pump repairs. In addition to pump efficiency, a flow meter can be used as a diagnostic tool, providing critical information and identifying system problems such as leaks, early on, so repairs can be made quickly, reducing downtime, and maintenance costs. 3. Know how much irrigation water you used this season to help you plan for next season - Records of water use allow growers and irrigators to make smart decisions on managing fields. Just as underwatering can result in decreased crop yields, overwatering can have similar effects. Historical data provides a better understanding of how weather patterns, including drought, can affect a growing season. A flow meter can show how much water was needed in past seasons, to help plan for future growing seasons. Whether you use center pivot, drip, microirrigation, or other methods of irrigating, a flow meter is an essential tool. It provides valuable information about water use and system efficiency; while helping irrigators manage and schedule irrigation more precisely; maximizing crop quality and yields, while conserving the world’s most precious natural resource. 14 APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Revolutionary Drilling Technology Presented at Geothermal Rising Conference Adapted from Information by EurekAlert At the recent Geothermal Rising Conference in San Diego, California, Matt Houde, founder and project manager at Quaise Inc., shared a scientific paper about the first test campaign to bring potentially transformative geothermal drilling technology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to the world. The test campaign involves researchers from the industry, along with MIT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Based at ORNL, it is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy through the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). Coauthors of the paper presented by Houde include Quaise CEO Carlos Araque, Paul Woskov of the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), Jimmy Lee of the PSFC, Ken Oglesby of Impact Technologies LLC, Tim Bigelow of ORNL, and Geoff Garrison and Matt Uddenberg of AltaRock Energy Inc. The mother lode of geothermal energy is about two to twelve miles beneath the earth’s surface where rock reaches 704ºF (374ºC), so hot if water could be pumped to the area, it would become supercritical, which is a steam-like phase similar to the vapor that makes clouds. Supercritical water can carry around five to ten times more energy than regular hot water, making it an extremely efficient energy source if it could be pumped aboveground to turbines and converted into electricity. Today, these resources are only accessed in places like Iceland and other areas where they are relatively close to the surface. The main obstacle is inability to drill deep enough. Drills used by gas and oil industries cannot withstand formidable temperatures and pressures found miles down. Quaise is working to replace conventional drill bits which mechanically break up rock. To do so, the company is researching millimeter wave energy, akin to energy used in microwave ovens. Millimeter waves (MMWs) literally melt then vaporize rock to create ever deeper holes. The general technique was developed by Woskov at MIT, who “over the last ten years demonstrated in the lab much of the core physics and science involved,” said Houde. Woskov, who recently completed testing which confirmed those data, also showed he could use MMWs to drill a hole in basalt with a 1:1 aspect ratio - two inches deep by two inches in diameter. Houde emphasized the general technology, such as the gyrotron machine producing the millimeter wave energy, is not new. “We’re leveraging some 70 years of research toward nuclear fusion as an energy source,” he added. “We don’t have to reinvent the wheel because fusion has pushed this technology to the point where it can serve our purposes. We simply have to optimize it for deep drilling.” The Quaise technique also takes advantage of conventional drilling technologies such as those developed by gas and oil industries. Traditional methods will be used to drill through surface layers to bedrock. The new testing campaign at ORNL will use a gyrotron ten times more powerful than the one Woskov used at MIT. The goal of current testing is to drill a hole with a 10:1 aspect ratio. The more powerful gyrotron will allow simulation of the full drilling process. Specifically, it will allow the team to vaporize rock. Woskov’s gyrotron was only powerful enough to melt the basalt. “This will be the first time anyone has done this,” said Houde. As discussed in the Geothermal Rising presentation, current tests will result in a wealth of new data “that will enable us to fully model the MMW drilling process.” The team is already moving forward with plans and equipment for additional phases of the test campaign. For example, engineers are building a second test fixture for the next phase at ORNL when they will aim for a drilling aspect ratio of 100:1. “Next, we’ll go to the field for a 1000:1 demonstration. We are developing a prototype MMW drilling rig for that purpose,” said Houde. “It’s a matter of proving out the MMW process at deeper and deeper depths.” Quaise Inc. engineers with a second test fixture to be used in developing a novel geothermal drilling technique. 15 APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Un-Comfort Zone II by Robert Evans Wilson, Jr. Kiss Future-Tripping and Negative Retrospection Good-bye Living in the present takes practice, but it can ease depression and anxiety. Deadlines looming, angry customers, bills stacking up, shrinking bank accounts, screaming children, school projects due, and now some idiot just cut you off in traffic! Lions, tigers, and bears . . . oh my! Overwhelm doesn’t just happen at this time of year (as in whenever you happen to be reading this); it can happen anytime. With today’s fast-paced and hectic daily schedules, a baseline of stress seems to be the new normal. The good news is there is a great way of dealing with it. Be in the Here and Now - It’s called mindfulness, or living in the present. It’s all about being actively engaged in the moment - where you are and what you are doing right now. Sounds easy enough until you realize much of your time is spent ruminating about the past (missed opportunities, failures, bad decisions, or good times you’ll never experience again), or worrying about the future (the possibility of illness, not meeting work goals, inflation, war, and so forth). According to the Mayo Clinic, “Mindfulness is the act of being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling at every moment - without interpretation or judgment.” The key part of that statement is to avoid interpretation or judgment. It is okay to feel your feelings; allow them to arise and then to pass without indulging or wallowing in them. Acknowledge a past loss makes you sad and the unknowns of the future make you nervous; the trick is not dwelling on it. It’s Impossible to Live in the Past or Future - Keep in mind, you cannot exist in the past or the future. The past has come and gone, it is static, and you cannot change it. The future is completely uncertain and will always contain endless possibilities. The only place you can exist is in the present - the here and now. For me, it took getting injured, being unable to walk, and having forced bed rest imposed on me for two months, to finally understand this concept. Nevertheless, it was still a gradual change. At first, because I couldn’t do anything, my anxiety got worse; so I started listening to guided meditation just to help me calm down enough to sleep. Later, I was able to do breathing exercises as necessary to refocus my thoughts. The concept of living in the present really crystallized for me when I came across these sage words by Lao Tzu: “If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.” While I had heard similar things before, such as the Serenity Prayer, Tzu’s words really resonated with me. Here’s How to Bring Mindfulness into Your Day - I find that beginning my day with just a few minutes of stretching (or yoga), then a few minutes of meditation (or breathing exercises) really helps me get a good start for the day. I like to begin and end my meditation with these words: “I release the past and the future. I embrace the present.” I find clearing my mind and focusing on my breathing allows thoughts of clarity and creativity to enter. It also energizes me for the day. If the energy wanes, I can do a five-minute refresher by closing my eyes and doing my mind-clearing and breathing exercises. Whenever you find yourself slipping out of the present, and into the past or future, refocus your thoughts by concentrating on what must (or should) be done in the next hour. If you can’t commit to an hour, select an amount of time comfortable to you, then build up until you can live your entire day mindfully in the present. Planning or Preparing for the Future is Practicing Mindfulness - Living in the present doesn’t mean you can’t plan or prepare for the future. If you must think about the past or future, do it in small, time-limited doses. Use reliving the past to remind yourself of a past success (such as journaling accomplishments or reviewing them to bolster your confidence) or to recall how you achieved it. You can think about the past to figure out what went wrong to fix it - as long as you do it without spending time in self-judgment. Accept the past, what you have learned from it, and move on with today. DaleCarnegie, in his book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, suggested learning how to live in day-tight compartments by diverting your pensive energy into practical projects, and focusing on doing our best one day at a time - Wilson continued on page 46.

They liked riding horses, spending time outdoors at the pond, having bonfires, and enjoying each other's company, and were married in 2015. Matt is survived by Candy; his children Victoria (Dustin), Lauren (Cody), Kolt (Erin), stepsons Wayne, Wade, and Waylon; grandchildren Alabama, Lyle, Lincoln, and Reese; his parents; sister Elizabeth (Pat); brother Glenn (Jackie); and many nieces and nephews. Lest we forget . . .

APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Patience Equals Peace by Tim Connor Life is moving faster for more and more people today. Everyone seems to be in a rush. We drive faster, eat faster, get upset when a plane is 15 minutes late, and get all stressed out when we have to wait in line for anything. How can you deal with the peaks and valleys, disappointments, and a variety of other feelings, emotions, and circumstances? The formula - Patience Equals Peace - is one I would like you to consider. Patience is a relaxed state where the person trusts the process of their life regardless of how it may be unfolding moment by moment. Peace is the outcome of this outlook and philosophy. In all of life there are trade-offs. Trade off patience and you may live with more stress and its consequences. Trade off satisfaction and you will wind up in a race for stuff that someday won’t really matter. Trade off time with loved ones and friends, and someday you may be alone. A lack of patience is evidence of a lack of trust and acceptance; the willingness to let go of the control of your life to the ebb and flow of the universe. The world is changing at unprecedented rates. We are all being flooded with more new information than we can ever possibly read, understand, and/or assimilate - and it is going to get worse. Don’t get me wrong. I am not against progress, technology, and new ideas. I believe many of these are important in a balanced life. I also believe there comes a point when we may sacrifice what is really important in life - our inner peace and harmony or even the quality of our relationships - for access to the latest website, social media, or speaking on our cell phone while driving or other activities. Life has an interesting way of keeping us focused on what really matters. It guides us gently at first toward that which will nurture our soul, but if we continue to ignore its guidance, it uses more destructive or devastating attention-getting devices. Don’t be lulled into the state of a constant search for something else or better. Satisfaction and peace come with acceptance and patience, not rushing. It is more reliable than cable ties or tape, which are common causes of broken or damaged pump wire. Constructed with safe plastic known to not trasmit chemicals, the self-aligning, self-adjusting, self-locking clamps are easy to use on 1-inch and 1¼-inch outer diameter rigid and poly drop pipe. Configured for 8-, 10-, and 12-gauge wire.

APRIL 2022 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Animals are Smarter than Humans Day I am not against traditions, celebrations, special events, or even stupid holidays, but watching this ground hog predicting the next few months is like letting a politician predict tomorrow or even the next year. I know in a past version of Billy Bob, I discussed a variety of crazy or stupid special holidays, but this month I want to focus on who (tongue in cheek) predicts the future and why we should believe them, listen to them, or even care what they think - keep in mind . . . this column is not (or supposed to be) about serious stuff. It’s just supposed to lighten your day or even a few minutes of your life . . . Okay, here we go: 2 Cats predicting the future - “Why do humans think we are so stubborn? We just want to maintain our independence and be left alone. Is that too much to ask?” 2 Monkeys predicting the future - “For many years we have been accused of being smarter than we really are. Yes we can talk and yes we can understand some words and emotions, but don’t be fooled - if we ever take over, you all will regret treating us so poorly and we will never stop harassing you until you give us the freedom we deserve.” 2 Mice predicting the future - “We may be little and not too smart, but we can disrupt your day any time we want, so stop trying to eliminate us from society. We will never give in and we can and will be here forever.” 2 Ants predicting the future - “Without us, you would have nothing to do in the summer. We help bring uncertainty and challenge to your warm days. You can just say thank-you.” 2 Owls predicting the future - “Yes, we can be a pain in the neck at night as you are trying to sleep, but without us, you would never see the bad times coming. You would just spend your days in la-la land wishin’ and hopin’ and dreamin’.” 2 Donkeys predicting the future - “When the world no longer has horses or the energy grid fails, you will have to rely on us to get you to new places in the desert or maybe even in your neighborhood, so be nice to us or you might end up stuck somewhere.” 2 Elephants predicting the future - “Okay, so we are the world’s biggest animal and many would believe the dumbest. But when we eat too much and leave our “mark” on the world, you might wish you had been just a little bit smarter and letting us roam in the wilds of nature and not your local zoo.” I know, I know the above comments were over the edge, but hey, it’s April and this is the month of April Fools Day . . . so lighten up dudes.
