The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) announced a potential breakthrough for increasing geothermal energy production at lower costs. The Rijswijk Centre for Sustainable Geoenergy (RCSG) will conduct further research into the Canopus technique for steel shot drilling. Currently in the Netherlands, 20 installations, mainly found in the greenhouse horticulture sector, produce about 1390 gigawatt hours of geothermal heat per year. The aim is to increase this tenfold to 13,900 gigawatt hours by 2030, and increase to 55,600 gigawatt hours by 2050. Geothermal energy is expected to be generated from more than 700 sites. To accomplish this, researchers must overcome technical challenges currently impeding the profitable production of geothermal heat. In the Rijswijk project, the Canopus steel shot drilling technique for controlled drilling of long side-track wells will be tested in a hydrostatic drilling test rig in real conditions. At the advanced state-of-theart lab, the entire spectrum of subsurface drilling can be mimicked with the real dimensions to determine how products, materials, and components behave under high pressure or at extreme temperatures at extended depths. The drilling and steering capability, as well as wellbore patterns of horizontal grids will be studied. The gas and oil industry uses the concept of drilling branches or horizontals out from the main bore into the reservoir to enhance production. Unfortunately, current horizontal drilling technologies are hardly used for geothermal drilling because of their cost and directional limitations. Researchers project the steel shot drilling technology will increase production at much lower cost compared to a vertical well with similar output. Multiple long horizontals should also increase the chance of finding good reservoir formations, currently one of the biggest risks for geothermal projects worldwide. Additional advantages include improved borehole quality and smaller footprint of equipment at the drilling site. The ultimate goal is to apply the steel shot drilling technology to maximize reliable and predictable geothermal production. New drilling method for geothermal productivity. GEO
