Work by Tim Connor I could write a 3000-word article on Joseph Conrad’s quote, but let me save your time and keep it short. Work should not just be about money, fame, power, fortune, or influence. Work is a fundamental human responsibility and opportunity. The responsibility to contribute to life, others, or the human story - and do it respectfully and compassionately. It is also the opportunity to learn, grow, excel, and create an inner sense of contentment, satisfaction, and wholeness. If your work is just about money or position or any of the other items listed above, I will guarantee there are many days when you regret having to go to work or do the work - wherever you are. I will also bet, if you can’t wait to retire, quit, or leave - the same is true. The opposite is when you see work as the opportunity to become a better you and share this better you with the world. I will also wager you look forward to every day of work no matter whether it’s your first day or your last year. This doesn’t mean all of the work is easy, wonderful, satisfying, etc. What it does mean, is in the end, the ultimate purpose for your work or career was to leave your world, community, circle of friends, family, or even a few strangers a better place because you were in it. I’m not implying you should never retire, or that all jobs or careers are satisfying. Want an example? How about missionaries who spend years in other countries and in environments which may not be safe, rewarding, or even have the necessary basics for life? So, why do these people do It? I guarantee it’s not for money.
