I know I am never the smartest person in any conversation, but I do feel I have some basics as when I asked myself the following questions I got them all right. I am not being critical or berating the following members of society in any way, but hey, when it comes to some basic knowledge, one has to wonder what else do these folks (idiots) not know? This column is called The “Idiots” Corner for a reason. So here are a few statistics that might surprises you. Could you answer any or all of these questions? I got these statistics from several resources as I didn’t want to depend or trust just one. Who can we trust these days? Especially not idiots . . . but I digress! c 42% of Americans don’t know where Japan is. c 15% of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a map. c 50% of Americans are unaware of the Cold War. c Only 6% of Americans read at least one book a year. c 60% of Americans are unaware of how the U.S. came to be a country. c 60% of the American population has never read a book of any kind. c Only 40% of teenagers can name all three branches of the U.S. government. c 70 million Americans don’t know Germany was our enemy during the Second World War. I can go on for pages, and it just gets worse. c Most people think third world countries are only about poverty. c Supermarket apples can be a year old. c 30% of Americans have no idea what the Holocaust was. c Dunce caps used to be signs of intelligence. c 20% of Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth. c Adolf Hitler was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. c The majority of Americans can name only one of the protections in the First Amendment. c 60% of Americans don’t have a clue about their banks and the cost of their services. Soooooo . . . would you like me to dig deeper into other topics most people don’t know much about - because after researching this one, you might be amazed at how dumb many people can be or are.
