You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” Question: “How can you say Jesus was secular, isn't that the opposite of what he taught?” The word secular simply means nonreligious, and the philosophy Jesus espoused is essentially nonreligious (it is not to be confused with his theology, of which I am not addressing). His philosophy can be appealing to and practiced by people of all faiths or lack thereof. That is the beauty of it. And, it is such an amazing system that if it catches on, will create genuine lasting peace in the world. Question: “Doesn’t the Bible teach that we are to obey government laws unless they conflict with God's laws?” The verse most often cited to support this theory is Romans 13:1 “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” This verse, however, is what the Apostle Paul said, who never actually met Jesus. Others cite Mark 12:17, Matthew 22:21, and Luke 20:25 where Jesus supposedly supports taxes. However, the complete story paints a different picture. The Pharisees are trying to trick Jesus into saying something that will get him arrested; so they go to him in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and ask, “Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?” He replies, “Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Jesus then says, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” Jesus essentially avoids the question. However, by getting them to produce the coin, he exposes them as hypocrites for violating their own law (the Second Commandment) by bringing a graven image into the Temple. Question: “Can’t you see from the crime and riots that society no longer has morals, which is why we need rules?” Perhaps I’m naive, but I believe people are basically good. Yes, there are a small percentage of people who are sociopaths, but creating a vehicle of rules to control them only gives the sociopaths the opportunity to take over the steering (which they always do). I believe Jesus offered a powerful message designed to lift man up and help us evolve. He tried to show us how to be free, if we only dare.
