In fact,MSHA issued 92 imminent danger orders for peopleworking at heightswithout fall protection between January 2019 and June 2020. Themost common violationswere drivers climbing atop their vehicles, aswell asmaintenance and quarrypersonnel climbing to,orworkingwithout fallprotection, inhighplaces.Even supervisorshavebeen foundwithout fall protection,andordered down fromdangerous locations. According to the safetyalert,mining companies should use the following bestpractices: •Reduce hazards. Try to designwork areas and develop job tasks tominimize fall hazardsaround the jobsite. •Haveaprogram. Establishaneffective fallpreventionandprotection programwhich includes task-andsite-specifichazard trainingprohibit- ingworking at unprotected locations. •Providea fallprotection. Eachminerwhomayworkatanelevated height,ora locationwithouthandrails,shouldbegivena fallprotection harness and lanyard. •Supplyanchorpoints. Thepointsmustbe secureplaces toattach lanyards and they should be easily identifiable. •Proactivelyenforceuse. Makingsureworkersareusing fallprotection equipmentand followingsafework-at-heightprocedures is justas im- portant as the equipment itself.Remember, everyone from supervi- sors andminers, to contractors and truck drivers,must follow safety regulations. •Consideradditionaloptions. Somesitesareable tousemobileorstationaryplatformsorscaffoldingonprojectswhere there is a risk of falling. •Provide safe truck tarping andbulk truckhatch access facilities.
