We bought it three years ago when we needed another vehicle and did not have the money for a diesel Mitsubishi crew cab. It was a flatbed with duals on the back. It had springs designed to carry a lot of weight, which it usually did not, and the ride it gave to the peo- ple in the cab would probably have pul- verized kidney stones. The next worse thing about the truck was the fact it was a gasoline engine. Over the years, we switched all our engines to diesel because they tol- erate the long periods of inactivity be- tween our drilling seasons. Gasoline engines gum up no matter how much fuel stabilizer is added. The only gaso- line engines we now have are on the welders. We decided to try to sell the Toyota, but when a mechanic looked it over, he pointed out the frame was so corroded in places it was paper thin. There was no strength left in the frame, and it was a miracle it had not simply folded in half on some of the terrible roads. Since we could not sell it, we decid- ed to ask the mechanic’s shop at the school to make a project out of rebuild- ing it. The boys attacked. Soon it was stripped of all the body parts and the damage to the frame fully revealed. There simply was no part good enough to weld repair parts onto. The whole frame had to be replaced. A little search- ing in Poptun located a frame which had been on a truck that rolled and destroyed the body, but the frame was in good shape except for a few dents and bent parts. We purchased it and the boys began to swap parts. Soon, the only part of the original frame remaining was the part with the vehicle number stamped on it. The rest was new again. The boys continued the assembly using the old body parts, bed, and all the rest. The engine was still working; though it is a gasoline engine, we are using it while we try to locate a diesel engine and matching transmission. The vehicle will be back in service soon. I don’t know if we will try again to sell it, but like many of the things we have, we will use them while they have life. Berny likes to say, “I think it will still serve.” That is what we do. La compramos hace tres años cuando necesitábamos otro vehículo y no teníamos el dinero para un camión diésel Mitsubishi de doble cabina. Era una camioneta de caja plana con doble llanta atrás. Sobre los años, cambiamos todos nuestros motores a diésel porque toleran los largos periodos sin actividad entre nuestras temporadas de perfora- ción. Los motores de gasolina se pegan y no importa que tanto estabilizador se les agregue. Los únicos motores de ga- solina que tenemos son en las soldado- ras. Decidimos tratar de vender la Toyota, pero cuando un mecánico la reviso, nos comentó que tenía tanto oxido en partes que era tan delgado como papel. No había fuerza en el chasis, y era un milagro que no se hubiera partido en dos en los terribles caminos. Como no la podíamos vender, deci- dimos preguntar al taller mecánico de la escuela que hicieran un proyecto de reconstrucción. Los muchachos ataca- ron. De pronto desarmada completa- mente y el daño al chasis se revelo por completo. Simplemente no tenía parte buena donde se le pudiera reparar o soldar partes. Todo el chasis se tenía que reparar. Una búsqueda breve en Poptun localizo un chasis de una camio- neta que se había volteado y destruyo la carrocería, pero el chasis estaba en buenas condiciones con excepto de unas abolladuras y partes dobladas. La com- pramos y los muchachos empezaros a cambiar las partes. De pronto, la única parte original que quedaba en el chasis era la parte con el número de identificación. El resto era nuevo. Los muchachos continuaron el ensamblado utilizando las partes vie- jas, caja, y todo el resto. El motor aun funcionaba; aunque era de gasolina, lo utilizamos mientras tratamos de localizar un motor diésel con la transmisión. El vehículo estará de nuevo en ser- vicio pronto. No sé si intentaremos ven- derla de nuevo, pero como muchas de las cosas que tenemos, las utilizaremos mientras tienda vida. Berny le gusta decir, “Creo que aun servirá.” Eso es lo que hacemos.
