WorldWide Drilling Resource

31 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® DECEMBER 2013 Through the Back Door! by Jim Kuebelbeck As a few readers of WorldWide have noticed, my Through the Back Door! articles took a bit of a “backseat” in recent months. This past summer was a busy time for us. Because of our con- tinued success locating groundwater sources in areas where locating such supplies are especially difficult, we now work with a growing number of water well drilling professionals who have kept us unusually busy these past months. This, coupled with a complete right knee replacement in early May, created quite a backlog of our water locating work which kept us very busy throughout the rest of the summer. Three weeks after getting my new knee, however, I was back on the road doing what we do. Needless to say, I was a bit careful when walking on uneven ground or steep hills! But life does go on. In June, Carol and I reached a mile- stone of sorts by being married for 50 years. To mark the occasion, we took all of our children and grandchildren to visit the Black Hills in South Dakota. The highlight of our trip was a visit to the Crazy Horse Memorial near Custer, where we were all treated like royalty. Carol and I had located a great water supply for the memorial a few years ago, which made it possible for them to remain independent of “outside” munici- pal water sources. Rollie Noem, the chief operating offi- cer treated our whole extended family as special guests, and told everyone Carol and I are “a part of Crazy Horse history”! We will long treasure such a testimonial and, after we are gone some- day, perhaps when our grandchildren visit the ongoing mountain carving in the future, they will take a bit of satisfaction in knowing their “Grandpa” contributed in some way to this great undertaking. To the readers of WorldWide who have never been to this totally private “nongovernment” project, I would ab- solutely recommend considering a visit. You will not be disappointed. The mon- ument will one day dwarf the carving at Mount Rushmore, and to see the work in progress is a great experience. The carving of Crazy Horse will be done “in the round” by virtually carving the whole mountain. To realize the immensity of this mountain carving and to give it an element of comparison, the four faces on Mount Rushmore would easily fit ‘“inside” just the carved head of Crazy Horse himself.
