39 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® OCTOBER 2013 Modine Then and Now Adapted from Information by Modine Manufacturing Company Arthur Bernard Modine was many things - inventor, industrial ist, phi- lanthropist, engineer. But most important- ly, he was a man of ideas, one of which he built into a reality that still bears his name today, Modine Ma n u f a c t u r i n g Company, now a world leader in heat- transfer technology. A. B. Modine found- ed the company in 1916 when he patented the Spirex radiator for tractors. The first factory was a 10,000-square-foot rent- ed space in the Sattley Bui lding in Racine, Wisconsin. The company’s first big break came in 1917 when a large auto acces- sory manufacturer, Harrison Radiator Company, entered into an agreement with Modine to manufacture radiators with a guaranteed minimum annual payment of $50,000 plus royalties. This transformed the small company into a thriving example of the free enterprise system. Sales in 1917 more than dou- bled from the first year ’s $360,000; factory space doubled; and Modine remained amply capitalized for new ventures. The great depression brought dark hours for the company, but a deal with Ford to provide radiators for their V-8 engine saved the day. Ford made the Turbotube radiator standard on al l Model Ts and Modine became a pub- licly held company. World War II brought another big moment for Modine when they began to manufacture air aftercoolers for use on P-51 Mustang fighter planes. This was an accompl ishment that influ- enced the company’s history for years to come. Through the years, Modine has con- tinued to move in concert with changing times. Modine Europe was established in 1990 and grew substantially in 1993 with the aquisition of Längerer & Reich, a German heat transfer company found- ed in 1913. This aquisition gave Modine over 150 combined years of thermal man- agement and heat transfer experience. The company is continuously mov- ing forward with a vision of global heat transfer leadership. This can be seen in Modine’s state-of-the-art technical centers - one in Racine, the other in Bonlanden, Germany, home of their European headquarters. Modine, busy building an empire. It’s easy to see why Modine is now an integral part of the world marketplace, bringing to it a history of manufacturing creativity and integrity. The company has turned its eye on the future, making sub- stantial product developments and in- vestments over the last several years through the launch of Effinity 93® and Atherion ® , and the aquisition of Airedale™ and Geofinity™. Modine now employees around 6500 people in 27 production facilities worldwide, and remains committed to offering and utilizing innovative prod- ucts and processes. The company will continue to invest heavily in research and development to create commer- cially viable, next-generation thermal products, which will ensure Modine’s continued success. )0 -4
