Battersby Updating the Health-Care Reforms for Tax Savings As the owners of many small busi- nesses attempt to deal with the burden- some rules, taxes, and premium hikes of the Affordable Care Act or ACA, costs continue to escalate and confusion reigns. While independent contractors and the owners of small drilling businesses largely escape the massive regulations imposed on larger employers, everyone should be aware of the law’s many provisions including: ] The so-called “Individual Mandate” requiring most individuals to either obtain qualified health-care cover- age or pay a penalty went into effect January 1, 2014. ] The “Employer Mandate” requir- ing large employers to either offer qualified heath-care coverage to employees and their dependents, or pay a penalty kicks in January 1, 2015. ] Med i care Tax wi thho l d i ng: Employers are required to withhold additional Medicare Tax on high- income taxpayers. ] Expanded W-2 reporting where employers are required to include on Form W-2 the total cost of em- ployer-sponsored health insurance coverage. ] Limits on contributions to FSAs, the Heal th Flexible Spending Arrangements used by so many of the self-employed, as well as many small business owners, to $2500 Battersby cont’d on page 56.
