the gas which ultimately decreases the cost of shipment and storage. Abbreviated as LNG. 37 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® APRIL 2015 Frequently-Used Geological Terms Part 38 Glossary Adapted from the Dictionary of Geological Terms L - Continued Light Mineral - A rock-forming mineral of a detrital sedimentary rock (sometimes referred to as clastic sedimentary rocks as they are made up of clasts or rock frag- ments), which has a specific gravity of less than 2.8 and is generally light in color. Light Oil - Crude oil with a high API gravity or Baumé gravity. API gravity is a standard adopted by the American Petroleum Institute for determining the specific weight of oils. Baumé gravity is the specific weight of a liquid measured on a scale based on the weight of water. Lightweight Aggregate - An aggregate with a relatively low specific gravity such as pumice, expanded shale, or vermicu- lite. Lignite - A brownish-black coal which is intermediate in coalification between peat and subbituminous coal. Lime - Calcium oxide or quicklime; also calcium hydroxide, or hydrated lime. This term is sometimes misused for limestone (agricultural lime) and calcium (carbonate of lime or lime feldspar). Limestone - A sedimentary rock con- sisting mainly of calcite, with or without magnesium carbonate. Limestone is the most important and widely distributed carbonate rock, and often contains fossils. Limonite -Afield term for a group of brown amorphous hydrous ferric oxides. It is a common secondary material formed by weathering of iron-bearing minerals. Limonite is a minor ore of iron. Limy - Something which contains a sig- nificant amount of lime or limestone. Lindgren’s Volume Law - The principle that during the formation of ore by re- placement, there is no change in rock volume or form. Replacement of material occurs on approximately a volume by volume basis. Lineament - A linear topographic feature of regional extent believed to reflect crustal structure. Examples include fault lines, aligned volcanoes, and straight stream courses. Linear - Arranged in a line or lines. Lineation - Ageneral nongeneric term for any linear structure in a rock such as flow lines, stretched clasts, or axes of folds. Linked Veins - An ore deposit pattern in which adjacent, more or less parallel veins are connected by diagonal veins or vein- lets. Liquified Natural Gas - Natural gas which has been cooled to about 320ºF (160ºC) for shipment or storage as a liq- uid. Liquefication reduces the volume of More terms to come next month!
