43 AUGUST 2015 Some Things the Employee Should Know (from the Boss’s Perspective) by Philip Warren The title Boss comes with many responsibilities the employee does not have to be concerned with, but should consider. If you work at a small business in particular, the demands on the boss are even greater; the boss is tasked with providing you, the employee, with a regular paycheck. This does not happen by accident, but by the boss doing a wide array of tasks every day. A typical do today list, for the boss might include the following: j Schedule work to be done by employees. j Contact customers in regard to work to be done. j Make sure all equipment is ready to mobilize and all needed supplies are available for the task at hand. j Work on business development (get new customers). j Work on compliance of business with all local and state laws, of which there are many! j Process accounting so the regular pay- check stays regular! j Attempt to encourage accounts receiv- able to pay for the work which may have been completed many months ago. In addition to these things, remember the boss has the same family issues we all deal with daily. Something else to consider are the finan- cial realities of doing business, such as the fact an employee’s hourly wage probably costs the boss about three times that amount, when you add in workers compensation insurance and state and federal taxes. And don’t forget liability, professional, and equipment insurance, real estate fees, as well as building and maintenance costs. The list goes on and on. In addition, if you are lucky enough to work for a company that still provides health insur- ance and matching funds for a retirement account, remember that money comes out of the boss’s pocket. So we see, even though the job the employ- ee just completed was billed out at X = (WOW!), after the boss pays all the expenses, he some- times ends up with Y = (AS IN WHY DID WE EVEN DO THIS JOB?). In conclusion, we see maybe the boss earns his money, just like the employee does. Play nice together. Thanks for reading.
