Some Things the Boss Should Know (from an Employee’s Perspective) by Philip Warren When faced with a decision, never have the mind-set: “It’s not personal, it’s just business”. Well let me tell you, from the employee’s perspective, it is very personal, and every choice made will eventually affect someone, and if the boss is so detached from this idea, he or she will eventually lose all credibility with their workforce. Employees are not robots; they have lives to live, with all the challenges every- one faces. Some employees may have made bad decisions in life which have kept them from achieving a higher rung on the ladder of success, or maybe they picked the wrong parents, or missed out on the many lucky breaks that came the boss’s way. Employees do not want to be looked down upon for their station in life. Employees want the boss to recog- nize their efforts on behalf of the compa- ny. This does not always require money, and bosses may be surprised to learn a few kind words and a genuine thank- you are great motivators. Employees want the boss to remem- ber how hard the job is they ask to be done. It is very easy for the boss to call from his nice comfy office and spout orders while the employee is up to their a-- in alligators and would like to get home before the season changes. A boss who spends time in the field now and then is rewarded with respect. The reward for hard work should not be an endless supply of it! Employees will make extraordinary efforts for the boss when needed, but when this becomes the norm, they feel taken advantage of. Employees do not want to be forced to do a job in a manner that is unprac- tical from their perspective. If they can do it safely and productively with their method, leave them alone. Remember, they know the equipment and conditions better because they work with it every day. They feel empowered by the ability to shape their job. Employees want to do good work for you, the boss. Give them the chance, and please run your business with integri- ty, empathy, and goodwill toward them. Help them when you can. They are the heart of your business. Remember, if all you are concerned about is winning the rat race, you will finish your life as one lonely, ugly rodent. Thanks for reading.
