WorldWide Drilling Resource

44 MAY 2015 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® you have it? Spend it, invest it, give it away, or hide it under the pillow? If your choice was more money and not time, what would you do first with more money? Keep in mind you don't know how much time you have left here. If your answer was more time and not money, we get 24 hours a day - no more, no less. If your answer was more time - the question is, why? Have you put things off during your life? Do you need more time to see it all, do it all, and learn it all? Keep in mind I didn't say how much time you will get - it's just an arbitrary figure. It could be weeks, months, or years - but does it really matter if you are wasting the time you have now? No matter how hard you work or play, there will never be enough time to do it all if your priorities or agendas are not in sync with your life goals, plans, dreams, or desires. I would like to have more time to trav- el, but know I will never be able to see everything I want, so the questions are - where are the most important places I want to go and things I want to see? This is the issue when we choose the more time option - what will you do with it? Just continue to spend the extra time as you have in the past, or get more focused and dedicated to doing and seeing what matters to you? In summary, we all get the time we have - no more no less - and none of us know how much time it will be. So why do we wait to do some of the things which matter, whether it is travel or just time with friends and family? If more money was your answer, ask yourself how this would change your life - not your circumstances, but your life. Stimulation, Deep Drilling, and a New Water Hammer Adapted from Information Provided by AltaRock Energy ON Energy provides drilling services and develops geothermal energy around the globe. The company’s water hammer drilling technology is delivering new solu- tions to the energy industry. AltaRock Energy, Inc. is a develop- er and operator of advanced geother- mal power projects using enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), and hopes to repower the grid by commercializing advanced geothermal technology to produce power. AltaRock Energy and ON Energy have partnered to further commercialize enhanced geothermal energy as a new source of electric power. Together, the companies plan to provide state-of-the- art tools for geothermal developers. According to the agreement , AltaRock’s Stimulation Services LLC business unit will contribute stimulation technology; and ON Energy, the exclu- sive U.S. drilling services partner of Hanjin D&B, will provide deep drilling services. Wi th combined technical resources, the companies aim to take a leadership position in the commercial- ization of products for deep geothermal reservoirs. “ON Energy has demonstrated excellence in bringing down the cost of hard rock drilling, and we see this as the critical next step in deploying geo- thermal power...,” said Aaron Mandell, CEO at AltaRock Energy. The agreement was established following a successful demonstration in the ci ty of Gwangju, South Korea, using a unique water hammer drilling machine. Hanj in D&B, the Korean manufacturing partner for ON Energy, achieved a depth of over 12,000 feet, at up to ten times the drilling speed of conventional drilling, with a 50% cost reduction. The water hammer is tailored for hard rock and can handle a wide variety of geologic conditions. “We are proud to partner wi th AltaRock. Using the water hammer technology, we will be able to introduce and deliver a first-of-a-kind drilling tech- nology for the U.S. geothermal indus- try...” said Daniel Lee, CEO at ON Energy. By combining geothermal stimula- t ion and deep dri l l ing into a single offering, Al taRock and ON Energy hope to provide a new cost structure for geothermal development. The goal is to reduce exploration risks by reduc- ing the expense involved with con- structing a reservoir. Used in conjunct ion wi th deep drilling, stimulations improve natural rock permeability and increase the pro- ductivity of injection and production wells. AltaRock and ON Energy plan to demonstrate their combined efforts this year at the Newberry Volcano EGS project in Deschutes County, Oregon. AltaRock and ON Energy hope this water hammer will unlock next-generation geothermal potential. Photo courtesy of Katie Fehrenbacher.
