Gas and Oil Project Brings Wetlands to the Desert Adapted from Information by BAUER Group and Petroleum Development Oman Deep in the vast deserts of Oman in the Middle East, you will find a unique one-of-a-kind oasis - of sorts. Amongst the dry desert land is the world’s largest commercial reedbed treatment plant. BAUER Nimr LLC, a local subsidiary of BAUER Resources GmbH, has been operating the plant for ten years. Spanning an area nearly the size of 1600 football fields, you can actually see the plant on satellite images. It is a multiaward winning flagship project for the biological cleaning of polluted water from oil production at the Nimr oil field. The first phase of the project was completed in 2011; after just three weeks, the plant achieved its first milestone by outperforming the contractually agreed upon cleaning capacity of more than 1.5 million cubic feet per day. The third and final expansion was successfully completed in 2019. At peak times, up to 6.1 million cubic feet of polluted water runs through the plant in a day. At the end of the process, nearly 95% of the crude oil in the water is removed or recovered without the use of energy or chemicals. Not only is this wetland remarkably efficient in its cleaning performance, but it also sets new standards for sustainability. Using natural flow processes, including graduated settling pits and reusing the purified wastewater on the surface, it is no longer necessary to use pumps for circulation or discharging residual amounts into the subsoil. Roughly 1.5 billion reed plants form the wetland area covering around 25.8 million square feet of previously arid desert. The wetland is irrigated with water from oil production activities providing a habitat for more than 140 animal species including numerous birds, fish, and reptiles. "After ten years of operation, a total of approximately 1.275 million tons of CO2 emissions have been saved - according to estimates, by the end of operations in 2044, it will save 4.5 million tons of CO2," explained Dr. Roman Breuer, managing director of BAUER Resources GmbH. The site is currently treating more than 700,000 barrels of produced water a day at a fraction of the cost and energy of conventional deep water disposal. ENV Photos courtesy of BAUER Group.
