With Pen - Computer in hand . . . Veronica I. “Ronnie” Jones, 850-547-0102 ronnie@worldwidedrillingresource.com BOY, have we got great news for you this month! Joint Ventures give more avenues of success to all those who take advantage of what is offered. We have not taken lightly to all we can bring to our industries, who are directly affected by drilling. No matter what you build, how you build it, it all started with drilling. By combining mailing WWDR and DBGD it’s a BIG win! So beginning with this October issue of our widely respected WorldWide Drilling Resource® magazine, we’ve made some improvements. The main body of the magazine now becomes “THE MAGAZINE.” It will continue to include those most informative articles bringing new technology, as well as valuable history to your doorstep; new and exciting industry events; and beautiful display advertisements which allow you to view in PRINT, as well as ONLINE, what manufacturers and distributors have to offer before you buy and easily contact them for more information. The BONUS IS - there is MORE ROOM for it. Classified advertisements will be found in Doc’s Buyers’ Guide for Drillers™. It has a comfy feel of great newsprint we are all so very fond of - but nowadays there is no black ink left on your hands. That’s a plus in and of itself! So, when you take advantage of PRINT CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING instead of looking at something online in listings, and then looking at another listing, never being able to find the original thing you really were interested in again, you actually appreciate the printed word. Just circle what you are interested in, continue looking and possibly finding something else you like, circle it, then when you are finished, you can actually call on the one(s) that interest you most. BOTH publications will continue in the one poly bag container to protect your copy from the harsh traveling it has to do to reach you. PLUS, you may just find an additional piece or two included which have bonus discounts, or new and interesting items breaking into the market. Everyone knows postage has continued to increase over the years. We have done our best to hold rates and bear the cost of mailing on our own. Now comes a time when we need help from you to bring these fine publications to you. We only ask for those in the United States to pay $1.00 per month; Canada and Foreign $1.67 USD per month billed annually beginning with our January issues, for the combined poly bag mailing. That means $12.00 USA; $20.00 Canada and Foreign USD will be the 12-month postal mailing fee. There is no charge for printing despite the fact many paper manufacturers have raised their rates five (5) times this year alone and will continue to raise their rates. Some papermills have closed or shifted their focus from “paper” to cardboard products, etc. Your understanding and help is greatly appreciated. 7 OCTOBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Your Focus by Tim Connor The ultimate achievement of a goal is less important than the ability to continue working toward it. Many people achieve their goal and are then disappointed once they get it. A goal once achieved is a milestone, yes, but you can’t just sit back and rest on your previous success. Even a shark will die if it doesn’t keep moving forward. So the key is just keep moving in the right direction if you want to some day arrive at the destination of your dreams. You tend to bring into your life that which is consistent with your focus. You can either focus on what is not working or what is; what you don’t have or you do; what you want or what you don’t; what you believe in or don’t. There is a great line (can’t remember where I heard it, just know I am not taking credit for it) that says: Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it. Most winners in life are grateful for their blessing, and focus on what they want, have, and can do. By the same token, most losers focus on what is missing, where they are not, and on what they can’t do. Persistence is the only way to guarantee your success over the long haul. Never give up. Never! The only way to know if your dreams will become reality is your willingness to stick with them regardless of setbacks, adversity, broken dreams, and negative feedback from the people in your life. How would you rate your persistence in life? Are you content with your life direction, or are you focused more on outcomes? A few quotes to ponder: “True greatness is starting where you are, using what you have, and doing what you can.” ~Arthur Ashe ”I couldn’t wait for success, so I went ahead without it.” ~Johnathan Winters “If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astonish ourselves.” ~Thomas Edison In His service, Tim Tim Connor may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” ~William James LongtimeCentral Mine Equipment Company (CME) sales representative, Rick Hutchings retired at the end of June. He began working for CME in December of 1984, following several years as an exploration drill operator for Consolidated Coal Company. He quickly became an integral part of the CME sales team, delivering and demonstrating equipment all over the U.S., and when he was at the CME factory, he was heavily involved in product development and testing. Rick has also been very active within the drilling industry. He has been the face of CME at many industry trade shows and conferences, both as a representative and a presenter. Rick is a Board Member of the National Drilling Association (NDA) and is currently Chairman of the NDA Convention Committee. He plans to continue his work with the NDA, so be sure to look for him at the 2021 National Convention and other NDA events. Rick has been a valuable resource for customers throughout the years. His knowledge and experience has helped many get out of difficult drilling situations and has probably helped as many avoid them in the first place. His patience and communication skills made him successful wherever he traveled for CME. The company is grateful for his dedication to the CME brand for so many years and wishes him well in retirement. Congratulations from the WWDR Team! 8 OCTOBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® UK’s 21 Moorfields Heavily Burdened Piles Set Record Compiled by the Editorial Staff of WorldWide Drilling Resource® The construction of LandSec’s 21 Moorfields development has set the record for the highest loaded piles ever to have been sunk in the City of London. The project won the British Geotechnical Association’s Fleming Award in 2020 for excellent design and construction. Judges were particularly impressed with the amount of innovation in the project. A 17-story, almost 200,000-square-foot future London headquarters for Deutsche Bank spans up to 180 feet, the full width of Moorgate underground station, a distance which is equivalent in length to the wingspan of a jumbo jet. With its eye-catching, exposed steelwork design, the building is expected to enhance the urban landscape of this transportation hub. Before any steelwork could be erected, a piling foundation problem required an innovative solution. The test pile was a success and actually achieved a peak test load of 5680 tons. Final settlement was three inches, which massively exceeded predictions of greater than 11 inches at this load, giving the project team confidence in their foundation solution. Because of underlying structures, locations for any new piles were extremely limited. A 154-ton piling rig, 154-ton crawler crane, and ten wet 99-ton bentonite tanks were needed to install the piles. Another problem emerged as the existing slab over Moorgate Station did not have sufficient capacity to support a rig. A 2204-ton temporary steel grillage, which covered most of the existing slab and transferred the plant loads to the existing station columns and their foundations, was designed to support the rig. After a complex maneuvering solution by a specialist heavy lift and haulage contractor, the piling rig and crane were successfully tracked onto the grillage. Because of limited construction space, the delivery team had only one opportunity to construct each large-diameter bored pile. If a position had to be abandoned or a pile needed to be downgraded, there were no alternative locations for piles. Due to the risk, the geotechnical and delivery teams collaborated early on to optimize the construction process. As a result, each pile was constructed without incident with all piles completed ahead of schedule. A total of 15 bored piles, most seven feet and a few almost six feet in diameter, extending about 197 feet into the ground, were threaded between the numerous undersite constraints in two parallel rows between the train running tunnels, allowing the building’s foundation to bridge the train lines below. The piles were base grouted six and a half feet into the underlying Thanet Sands, a 58 million-year-old geological formation of fine-grained gray-brown sand, more than 164 feet below the station. The load carried by individual piles was greater than any other single pile in the UK, and equivalent to the typical load seen in columns of a 30-40-story tower. Each of the super piles was fitted with strain gauges and fiber-optic monitors to enable the piles’ settlement to be closely monitored as construction progressed. A complex engineering project, the development has made good use of a diverse cross section of skills and experience from the project team to push the boundaries of design and construction practices. Super piles made the development of 21 Moorfields possible, and the increased load supported by each pile has the potential to open up similarly challenging sites in the city, enabling developers to build higher and span wider than ever before. The construction on 21 Moorfields is due to be completed sometime this year and will open in 2022. Piling grillage above train lines. Photo courtesy of Robert Bird Group. C&G

Gas and Oil Project Brings Wetlands to the Desert Adapted from Information by BAUER Group and Petroleum Development Oman Deep in the vast deserts of Oman in the Middle East, you will find a unique one-of-a-kind oasis - of sorts. Amongst the dry desert land is the world’s largest commercial reedbed treatment plant. BAUER Nimr LLC, a local subsidiary of BAUER Resources GmbH, has been operating the plant for ten years. Spanning an area nearly the size of 1600 football fields, you can actually see the plant on satellite images. It is a multiaward winning flagship project for the biological cleaning of polluted water from oil production at the Nimr oil field. The first phase of the project was completed in 2011; after just three weeks, the plant achieved its first milestone by outperforming the contractually agreed upon cleaning capacity of more than 1.5 million cubic feet per day. The third and final expansion was successfully completed in 2019. At peak times, up to 6.1 million cubic feet of polluted water runs through the plant in a day. At the end of the process, nearly 95% of the crude oil in the water is removed or recovered without the use of energy or chemicals. Not only is this wetland remarkably efficient in its cleaning performance, but it also sets new standards for sustainability. Using natural flow processes, including graduated settling pits and reusing the purified wastewater on the surface, it is no longer necessary to use pumps for circulation or discharging residual amounts into the subsoil. Roughly 1.5 billion reed plants form the wetland area covering around 25.8 million square feet of previously arid desert. The wetland is irrigated with water from oil production activities providing a habitat for more than 140 animal species including numerous birds, fish, and reptiles. "After ten years of operation, a total of approximately 1.275 million tons of CO2 emissions have been saved - according to estimates, by the end of operations in 2044, it will save 4.5 million tons of CO2," explained Dr. Roman Breuer, managing director of BAUER Resources GmbH. The site is currently treating more than 700,000 barrels of produced water a day at a fraction of the cost and energy of conventional deep water disposal. ENV Photos courtesy of BAUER Group. 14 OCTOBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Dry Steam Geothermal Generates Power Compiled by the Editorial Staff of WorldWide Drilling Resource® The United States leads the world in geothermal electricity production, generating 3567 megawatts of power with another 1270 megawatts of additional projects in development. To tap into this energy, heat must be carried to the surface with fluid circulation through any number of taps, including magma chambers, hot springs, drilled wells, and hydrothermal transmission. The largest geothermal power plant in the world, in terms of power capacity, is actually a massive geothermal complex of power plants known as The Geysers in California. The Geysers geothermal field actually has no natural geysers anywhere in the Geysers-Clear Lake area. Because of the fumarolic activity and steam rising from hot springs, the namewas derived from early explorers. Naturally occurring steam field below the earth’s surface are found in the Mayacamas Mountains, 75 miles north of San Francisco, covering 29,000 acres (45 square miles) in the counties of Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino. The Geysers draws steam from 350 production wells. There are 18 currently operating geothermal plants with a combined capacity of 1517 megawatts of electricity around the clock, enough to power 900,000 homes. The Geysers is unique with its high-temperature, dry steam resource, which can be directly used to move turbines and generate electricity. The steam is harnessed from a greywacke sandstone reservoir located at the top of a mix of lowpermeability rocks. Since the reservoir rock is primarily a relatively brittle type of sandstone unit broken by fractures, the steam is easily transmitted. A large molten rock chamber, spanning four miles belowground with a diameter greater than eight miles, heats the steam reservoir. The deepest well is 12,900 feet, over two miles belowground, and the average well depth is 8500 feet. Steam is brought to the surface through pipes and then supplied to a network of interconnected power plants with 80 miles of pipelines. There, the steam spins conventional steam turbines, which runs the generators, producing electricity. Accounting for 20% of the clean power generated in California, The Geysers supplies electricity to Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Marin, and Napa counties. This valuable reservoir, one of California’s most reliable sources for energy, experienced a reduced flow of steam across the geothermal field in the late 1980s. Today, it is recharged by an average injection of over 15 million gallons of treated wastewater daily to produce additional electricity. Piped up to 50 miles from its source at the Lake County Sanitation waste water treatment plants and the city of Santa Rosa, the treated wastewater is sent through the 54 injection wells into the steam field. This not only increases the power generated but also protects the local waterways, lakes, and other surface waters from becoming polluted. Geothermal power is considered a sustainable, renewable source of energy since the heat extraction is negligible when compared to the earth’s internal heat budget, which is estimated at 47 terawatts (47 trillion watts). Of the nearly two dozen geothermal power plants located at The Geysers, 15 are owned by Calpine Corporation, with the others owned by the Northern California Power Agency and Santa Clara’s Electric Utility. 15 OCTOBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Mineral Exploration Gets A Boost in Ontario Compiled the Editorial Staff of WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Ontario government is taking proactive steps to increase mineral exploration by launching a new online tool, making it easier for companies and prospectors to identify areas available for exploration and claim registration, while also investing in mineral exploration and mining research. These actions are part of the province’s plan to stimulate the sector and encourage investment to promote economic recovery. Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) Focus is the province’s innovative online geoscience tool, which consolidates historical exploration information from various databases into a one-stop, easy-to-use format. Drawing geoscience data from the Ontario Assessment File Database, the Ontario Drill Hole Database, and the Mineral Deposit Inventory database, the series of map layers is a free, publicly-accessible tool. Saving time and resources, users can search by clicking on a data hotspot to quickly and easily find areas around the province where mineral exploration has occurred, where data is available, and where land is open for claim registration. This tool is the leading provider of reliable, credible, accessible geoscience data, information, and expert knowledge in Ontario. Greg Rickford, minister of energy, Northern development and mines said, “The OGS Focus tool is a stateof-the-art, customer-focused product that will further solidify Ontario’s position as a leading global jurisdiction in mineral exploration and production.” Teaming up with Lakehead University, the Ontario government is investing by providing more than $690,000 to support a new five-year Industrial Chair in Mineral Exploration, which will be held by Dr. Peter Hollings, the current chair of the school’s geology department. Part of a $2.15 million initiative, this effort hopes to speed up the process of mineral exploration, bringing more mines online to meet the need for raw materials required for the technologies powering a modern economy. Of the funds announced early this year, $375,000 comes from Impala Canada, the palladiumminer owning and operating Lac des Iles Mine near Thunder Bay. Another $690,000 comes from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. The remainder of the funding is being provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Counci l of Canada and Lakehead University. Hollings and his team will work with Impala Canada and their geology team to analyze nickel, copper, and platinum group elements, as well as the associated geological attributes near the Lac des Iles Mine and the surrounding area. Mineral Exploration cont’d from page 15 Thunder Bay, Lac des Iles has been in operation for more than 25 years and employs roughly 700 peope. It’s one of only two primary palladium producers in the world. In 2019, the mine was acquired by South African miner Impala Platinum Holdings when the company purchased North American Palladium and its assets for $1 billion, creating Impala Canada. The results of the teamwork near the mine will lead to new analytical models accelerating the exploration and mining of these strategic minerals, potentially reducing the development time of newmine sites. Tim Hill, CEO at Impala Canada, called mineral exploration the “lifeline of the mining industry,” creating jobs and community development opportunities. He added, “We are confident this collaborative research will greatly enhance the potential for discovery of new mineral resources and have a significant impact on future growth and investment in the Thunder Bay Mining District.” There are lots of drawbridges over the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon; even the interstate highway has one. The Burnside Bridge in this photo was completed in 1926. Officials are looking to replace it with one which can better withstand an earthquake. 17 OCTOBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® In Memoriam Kenneth J. Constable (1942~2021) With smiles such as these, as long as we keep them close to our hearts and speak of all the good times we had with them while we had them in our lives, they shall live forever. Sadness fell upon me as I read the e-mail from Jennifer letting us know that our dear friend, Ken (and then reading about the loss of Sandra, his wife in 2016, for the first time), the sadness got all the more intense. These people were part of those bright lights I remember so fondly as I traveled to many Canadian Provinces for trade events through the years. This photo taken in 2009, no doubt by me, brings them back to life as I can see them sitting right there in front of me. This is the way I will always remember them smiling . . . and hope you will too. As everyone knew, Ken was a Past President of the Ontario Ground Water Association, having served 1974/1975, a Board Member, and a diligent, happy-go-lucky supporter of the association for many years. Ken was presented with the award of Honorary Member by the association. He left this earth on August 2nd, in his sleep at Southlake Regional Health Center at the age of 82. Ken is survived by his son, Kevin (Nicole), and daughter Kerri; step-father of Terry (Grant) Spurdle and Kevn Hawley. Grandfather of Ryuan, Kurtis, and Max. Brother of Joan (Spencer) Finch, Freda (George) Agar, Dona Irvine, Dale (Jean) Constable, and predeceased by Anne (Garry) Fry. As you look at the photos taken during 2007-2009 below, may you all know our hearts and prayers go out to each family member, friend, and associate of these wonderful people. There were such great games (actually working trials) played at some of the Ontario events and some will no doubt remember how hard Ken worked at winning. Just look at him here. By golly, I think he and his team won! If not, they sure look happy anyway. The management and staff of WorldWide Drilling Resource, Inc. extend their condolences to Ken’s family, friends, and former colleagues. Lest we forget... 19 OCTOBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Borehole Cleaning Part 1 of 2 by Ronald B. Peterson Drilling Products Specialist, Mountainland Supply Company I could have titled this article Drilling Fluid Rheology and Hydraulics; the Thixotropic Properties of Drilling Fluids. I thought about it and decided very few would even finish reading the title. So I renamed it. In my article last month, we discussed marsh funnel viscosity, one of the most elementary of the fluid properties. Marsh funnel viscosity gives you the relative state of the viscosity, or thickness of the drilling fluid, and is an indication of any changes which are occurring during the drilling process. This month, we will discuss flow types and some of the other properties that impact the ability to clean the borehole. These properties are called thixotropic properties and are included in Rheology and Hydraulics. There are three basic types of fluid flow: • Laminar Flow - Occurs at low to moderate pumping rates when the layers of the fluid move past each other in an orderly fashion parallel to the walls of the borehole. Friction between the fluid and the borehole walls is lowest for this type of flow. This results in lower fluid friction losses and pressures during the pumping process. • Turbulent Flow - Occurs at high pumping rates where the fluid moves in a chaotic fashion. Particles in turbulent flow are carried by random loops and current eddies. Friction between the fluid and the borehole wall is highest for this type of flow. This results in greater friction losses and pressures. • Transitional Flow - Occurs when the flow is shifting from laminar flow to turbulent flow and vice versa. The critical velocity of the fluid is the particular velocity at which the flow changes from laminar to turbulent or vice versa. There are two basic fluid types, Newtonian and non-Newtonian. Most drilling fluids are considered non-Newtonian. We are going to discuss how these properties and characteristics impact our drilling operations, but we will not go into how to obtain all the numbers. Annular velocity is the flow rate of the fluid moving between the drill pipe and the borehole. Annular velocity in feet per minute is calculated by using the following formula: (24.5 x your pump rate) / (borehole diameter squared - drill pipe diameter squared) Higher annular velocities result in turbulent flow. Turbulent flow can result in hole erosion and enlargement. In general, for a typical conventional mud rotary drilling operation the ideal flow rate is between 90 feet per minute (ft/min) and 120 ft/min uphole velocity. Air drilling operations usually require much higher velocities, and stiff foam drilling operations can actually be effective at lower velocities. Slip velocity is the rate of speed at which a cutting will fall through the fluid and settle out in the borehole or in the surface pit. Slip velocity is dependent in part on the density of the cuttings, as well as the density of the drilling fluid. Different formations have different densities. In general, the density of water is 1. The density of drill cuttings is usually approximately 2.5; however, some highly mineralized zones, especially those containing metals, may approach a density of 5. Slip velocities are also affected by the viscosity of the fluid and by the yield point. It is critical you have a high enough annular velocity to exceed the slip velocity of the cuttings, to remove them from the borehole. The density of the fluid also affects the slip velocity. The higher the density of the fluid, the greater the buoyancy or tendency of drill cuttings to float in the fluid. This can either slow or stop the particles’ tendency or ability to settle out. 20 OCTOBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Cluster of Sapphires Worth $100 Million Found by Accident Compiled by Amy White, Associate Editor, WorldWide Drilling Resource® Located in southwestern Sri Lanka, the town of Ratnapura is the country’s largest producer of precious and semiprecious gems. The name Ratnapura means “City of Gems.” A recent backyard sapphire discovery was considered an enormous surprise, even in this city known for its gems. The discovery happened as workers were digging a well on private property and happened upon a mind-boggling cluster of 2.5 million sapphire carats weighing over 1000 pounds. The cluster measured 39 inches long and 28 inches wide and was named the “Serendipity Sapphire.” The owner of the land where the cluster was discovered happens to be a third-generation gem trader. He said it took more than a year to clean mud off the specimen so he could evaluate the stone and have it certified. As the owner cleaned, he said large pieces of star sapphires of the f i nes t qua l i t y peeled away from the clump. G e m o l o g i s t Gamini Zoysa said this is the largest occurrence he has ever seen, and the specimen is likely about 400 million years old. The discovery is hopeful for Sri Lanka as the country’s gem industry works to recover losses due to lockdowns brought on by the pandemic. According to some experts, it is not a given that all sapphires in the specimen will be top quality. Even so, the gem industry of Sri Lanka is optimistic the “Serendipity Sapphire’s” size and worth will captivate buyers across the globe. Sri Lanka’s annual gem and jewelry industry is valued at approximately $550 million. The “Serendipity Sapphire” has an estimated value of up to $100 million. Thilak Weerasinghe, chairman of the National Gem and Jewelry Authority of Sri Lanka, said the “Serendipity Sapphire” is most likely the largest sapphire specimen in the world. Sri Lanka is no stranger to famous gem discoveries. The 392.52-carat “Blue Belle of Asia,” the fourth largest sapphire ever recorded, was found in Sri Lanka in the 1920s. Another famous sapphire discovered in Sri Lanka is the “Star of India,” a 563-carat gem currently housed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. 22 OCTOBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Un-Comfort Zone II by Robert Evans Wilson, Jr. Psst, Subtle Suggestions Can Alter Your Behavior I have written about the importance of critical thinking, and how it can be impeded by cognitive biases. Another obstacle to the clarity of critical thinking can be the power of suggestion. The power of suggestion is very powerful indeed. If I say, “Don’t think of a red apple,” you are going to think of a red apple anyway, even if it is just the momentary flash of an image in your brain. And, when our subconscious mind is exposed to a constantly repeated message, it is going to penetrate unless we are paying attention. When it comes to advertising, most of us are accustomed to seeing the power of suggestion in action: a sizzling steak with crisscross grill marks, a steaming pizza with bubbling cheese, or lobster, shrimp, and crab drizzling with hot butter - all popping up on our screens around dinner time to trigger our appetites. How else is the power of suggestion being used? Is it being used for good or bad? The Healing Power of Suggestion - Most of us are also familiar with the concept of placebos which are (usually sugar pills) given to someone in a drug trial, who then gets better even though he or she did not receive the real medicine. Placebos work because of the power of suggestion. Another concept, nocebo, is when someone who is given a placebo experiences the adverse reactions or side effects attributed to the real medicine. I recently watched a documentary (Mind Field, Season 2, Episode 6: The Power of Suggestion) featuring a feasibility study conducted by Samuel Paul Louis Veissière, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Jay Olson, Ph.D. Psychiatry, and professional magician, to determine if some childhood illnesses could be cured by the power of suggestion. The subjects of the study included a boy with chronic headaches; a girl with eczema who was compulsively picking at it and causing bleeding and scabbing; and a hyperactive boy with ADHD. They were put into a deactivated MRI scanner and told the treatment would help with their problems. After the treatments, all three children saw their symptoms go away. I was fascinated by the study and especially how Dr. Olson used his expertise in magic to increase the credibility of the procedures to make them more believable to the subjects. I reached out to Dr. Olson requesting an interview. I began by asking, “How did your background as a magician lead you to an interest in researching the power of suggestion?” Dr. Olson replied, “Magic led me to psychology. Magicians don’t know why magic tricks work; they know how to make them work; they know how to fool people; but they often don’t know the mechanisms underlying the different tricks. What pulled me into psychology was studying some of these tricks . . . and then I started using magic and a kind of deception that magicians use as a method to enable other things in psychology like new kinds of paradigms, and one of those paradigms we showed in that documentary where we were making people feel like we were controlling their mind.” He continued and said that led to his asking this question: “What if we could make people feel like they have more control over their symptoms?” (NOTE: In the documentary Dr. Samuel Veissière, qualifies this further by stating, “The work we do with children actually does not involve lying. We tell them at first that everything they see and everything we do in the lab is a suggestion. We explain to them that suggestion is a way to tap into the power of their mind, and we keep emphasizing even as they go into the scanner that it is their mind and their brain that is doing the healing, that they are basically reprogramming their own brain.”) Much of What You Believe May Be the Product of Suggestion - Hypnotists use the power of suggestion to help people change behaviors. They begin by getting the subject to relax. Once the subject is relaxed or in a trance (a state of semiconsciousness between being asleep and awake), the hypnotist will make suggestions which will hopefully be accepted by the subject’s subconscious mind. In his book, Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television, Jerry Mander cites that many experts consider television watching to be on par with hypnotism. This made me wonder how the constant negative stories presented by the news media might begin to stack up and increase the levels of fear felt by the viewing audience. When people are frightened or otherwise thrown off balance, they are more prone to suggestion. For example, after seeing a news report of a tragic event such as an airplane crash, some people will be more likely to fear flying. People often overestimate the chances that it will also happen to them (see Availability Bias in my article: Cognitive Bias is the Loose Screw in Critical Thinking). Another example is when you hear on the news it is flu season, that suggestion may give you an expectation of catching the flu which might actually cause you to suffer flu-like symptoms. “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” ~Malcolm X We watch television to relax and be entertained, however when we are not on guard against the power of suggestion, we are vulnerable to it; advertisers and media programmers count on this. Protect yourself by staying alert, or better yet, turn the TV off! Robert Robert is an innovation/change speaker, author, and consultant.
