We Recycle As this 2020 year comes to a close, our futures may be uncertain (as they always are). There is one thing I know for sure, our Drilling Industry across this nation and the world, will remain strong as it has for years gone by. Drilling nowadays is somewhat easier, and we tend to forget how hard it was to dig and twist and pound the way through dirt, rock, clay ~ across and through mountains and streams, to build a future for generations to come. All one would have to do is go watch the films of how that Hoover Dam, Mount Rushmore, and most recently that enormous undertaking of the Crazy Horse Monument to see how difficult it was “back in the day”. They were strong, very strong people, with visions and dreams of a better life, just as you are today. Don’t ever let go of your visions and dreams. Stay strong. Remember, the future depends on drilling. TheWWDRTeam certainly enjoyed hosting ourFirst AnnualWorldWideDownHome DrillFest™ at the historic Welk Resort in Branson this past October. From all accounts, everyone had a great time, and that is why we had this event; to give everyone who wanted to join in on the camaraderie of good friends, business acquaintances from the past, and meet new ones that each of us will remember going into the New Year and beyond. The Un-Comfort Zone II by Robert Evans Wilson, Jr. When You Use This Stunning Power There Are No Limits I have written in this column many times about the value of creative thinking. And, I’ve written about the various key components of creative thinking. But, I’ve never written about how one of those can transform your life for the better. When you put this component to work, the world will open up for you. You’ve probably already used this tool of creativity. Most likely, at some point in your life, you planned a vacation or a trip. You chose a place, perhaps it was in an exotic location. Then you figured out where you would stay. Next, you arranged how to get there. Finally, you selected the activities you would do: amusements, entertainments, and dining experiences . . . or maybe it was with the activities you started your plan. Or, perhaps you’ve planned a party. You came up with a theme. Then you contrived the festivities: dancing, singing, charades, trivia, and such. Next, you selected the foods and beverages to serve. And, finally you created a guest list and sent out invitations. When you made these plans, you utilized the amazing tool of creative thinking. And, you can use it to enhance your finances, get the things you want, find the love of your life, and improve your health. What is this amazing tool, this component of creative thinking? It’s imagination, and it is a natural exercise we should be doing every day. Everything that comes to us begins with imagination, but as we enter full adulthood: working, bills, committing to a relationship; raising a family . . . we stop using our imagination. When we stop using it, the progress of our lives slows down or comes to a halt. What is it you want? Is it more freedom to do what you want to do? Is it more money to buy the things you want? Is it less stress and more tranquility in your life? Is it more confidence to influence others, or to excel further in your career? If you’re not living where you want to live; if you’re not driving the car you want; if you’re not working in the profession of your dreams; if you’re not in the romantic relationship you desire, it’s because you haven’t been using your imagination, or because you’ve been dreaming too small. The good news is, it is never too late to start. When you are anxious or worried, you shut imagination down. Or worse, you are imagining the very thing you don’t want. I find imagination is a great way to stop worrying. You replace negative thinking with positive thinking. It helps with mindfulness too, because it gives you a goal you can focus on daily or in the moment - whenever you feel anxiety or depression coming on. Imagination is the tool we use to program our subconscious mind to help us achieve our goals and dreams. When we imagine something often enough; when our desire becomes potent enough; our subconscious mind starts working 24/7 to achieve that thing until it is accomplished. You will start to notice opportunities or avenues to achieve your goal. Your powerful subconscious mind is always on the alert to deliver on your desires. Here’s a way to help you understand how your subconscious mind works: think about the last time you were in the market for a new car. You considered your budget and needs, and then you searched the market. You looked at all the different makes and models which suited your criteria until you finally decided on the one car that would work for you. Before you decided on that particular make and model, you never noticed those cars on the road, but once you made the commitment to buy that car, you started seeing them everywhere. You were probably shocked at how many there were. It was as if the road was littered with them. It was your subconscious mind alerting you to that which will fulfill your desire. And, that is how it works when you put your imagination to work. Perhaps Mahatma Gandhi said it best, “We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” Starting now, take a little time each day to turn your imagination on, and dream about the person you want to be, and the world you want to live in. You have the power to make it possible. Robert Robert is an innovation/change speaker, author, and consultant. 9 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® DECEMBER 2020 Largest Contributor to Australian Economy The Minerals Council of Australia announced that economic data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirmed the importance of the mining industry to the Australian economy. In a year where every nation was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the mining industry was a pillar of stability in Australia. Despite the overall economy, mining industry GDP (gross domestic product) increased 4.9% in 2019-20, totalling $202 billion. This also made mining Australia’s largest industry, with a 10.4% share of the economy. The Australian minerals industry is a major contributor to investment, high-wage jobs, exports, and government revenues. There are 240,000 people directly employed by the resources sector and a total of 1.1 million direct and indirect jobs in the mining and mining equipment, technology, and services sectors. Growth in mining industry GDP has allowed for the hiring of new workers while adhering to strict health and safety protocols which have protected people in their workplaces and communities around the country. Mining companies support thousands of regional businesses around Australia and their workers who provide essential services that keep the industry operating. While putting jobs on the ground and paying their fair share of taxes and mineral royalties, the mining industry also supports the local communities they partner with, through donations to local hospitals, charities, child care centers, and schools. To ensure mining continues to drive Australia’s post-COVID economic recovery, government should support the industry with faster project approvals, competitive tax rates, co-investment in modern skills programs, and more flexible workplaces.

Years ago, bigger cars suggested affluence, and most of the time a bigger product of any type was more expensive. Big things often create problems little things don’t. Big cars, in addition to being more expensive to buy and fuel, are often more expensive to repair and more difficult to maneuver - like putting one in a parking space. Now if you really need the big product to do something you need, like a truck to haul bulky items such as furniture, then by all means, buy one. Buying something big just to have something big, may be a personal preference, but it isn’t practical - like the monster truck which is 10 feet tall and 25 feet long whose sole occupant is a 5-foot, 95-pound woman. Fitting the product to the task is a good practice regardless of the industry. Boeing is ending production of the 747 aircraft, not because it was a problem airplane. With the advent of large, twin-engine airliners which were more fuel-efficient and required less (and less expensive) maintenance made the decision to switch a no-brainer. Electronic equipment manufacturing is also moving in that direction with electronic parts getting smaller and often requiring microscopes and special machinery to handle the parts. Some parts are so small they look like grains of pepper. The image at the top of this article shows a MOSFET (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor) placed on a British postage stamp for size comparison. This type of transistor is basically a voltage-controlled semiconductor switch, and has many uses. Electronics started with through-hole printed circuit boards (PCBs) where the leads on the device were pushed through holes in the PCB and soldered to the PCB. Now everything is moving to surface-mounted devices (SMT) where the part is soldered to pads plated on the board, and there are no holes. To the right is a photo comparison of throughhole and surface-mount resistors. It’s wise to use surface-mount parts wherever possible, mostly because they cost less because they use less material. They do have other advantages, as well. They are better suited to automated assembly using “pick and place” machinery, and their small size often allows smaller (read: less expensive) and simpler PCB construction. Please note these smaller parts do not compromise the circuit performance in any way, but do make a big difference in cost. These new technologies are a win-win for both the producer and the consumer, and just one more example of where bigger is not necessarily better. 14 DECEMBER 2020 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Temporary Truth and the Consequences 2 by Tim Connor I finally figured it out. The single biggest issue contributing to poor communication, increased conflict, negative relationships, ineffective employee performance, declining health, bad decisions, lost business, ineffective management, and declining organization success (need I go on?) - is simple but not complicated. In a word, it is “reality or truth” and not what was true, but what people wanted you to believe was true. When you deal in truth, you have a better percentage of better outcomes than when you deal in “Temporary Truths” or lies. Let me explain. Everyone has opinions, values, attitudes, prejudices, and beliefs grounded in personal experience, upbringing, conditioning, and education. When blended into a person’s mindset, these create their personal sense of reality; what is, what is right, what is wrong, what needs to change, etc. The problem gets even worse when people begin to believe their sense of reality (the previous stuff and more) is THE “reality”, in other words - all other views, opinions, attitudes, beliefs, etc. that disagree with it are wrong, outdated, stupid, unnecessary, or invalid because they are different than theirs or challenge theirs. Imagine for a minute the last conflict you had with an employee, spouse, or customer - I will guarantee its source was the attempt by both of you to validate your own opinion(s) and invalidate the other person’s. Due to current trends in political correctness, social media, and the selfie generation, we are very rapidly losing the ability to develop meaningful relationships grounded in respectful acceptance of different opinions, values, beliefs, etc. - both business and personal - that are grounded in openness, understanding, tolerance, and respect. So, what’s the answer? Well, there are a few things we all need to understand if we are going to deal in truth going forward. Let me just give you a brief overview as I’m sure you have other things to do. Fear - Fear is the most powerful emotion in life. When we let others use it with lies or lack of truth, we give them power over us until the fear leaves us. The hundredth monkey effect - This concept says that once an idea, rumor, concept, or invention hits critical mass, it is spread quickly as truth regardless of its validity. The need for control - Many people today will say or do anything that gives them perceived control or power. The problem is, if their actions are not grounded in truth, eventually they will fail and lose this power or control. Just look at global dictators over the years who have disappeared. The need or desire for approval or acceptance - Many people today want to be liked and respected, and want friends and connections who will “friend, like, support” them. Let me ask you, how many connections do you have on Facebook or LinkedIn who you don’t know at all, but call them friends? Arrogance and ego - People who are driven by ego and arrogance will often do or say anything that helps them maintain their reputation (no matter how dishonest it may be), control, or ability to influence others. Just look at many politicians today. Insecurity - If people feel insecure, they will often say anything to help them manage their insecurity. Denial - Denial is simple. It refuses to accept reality, truth, or any situations or circumstances that are. Criticism avoidance - Often, people will avoid the truth, endorse untruths, or just stay quiet for fear of losing their job, career, a relationship, or even their health or safety. Assumptions - Assumptions are stupid. When someone tells you something and you don’t question it, you give them power over your ideas, actions, beliefs, values, etc. Uncertainty and change - When life is uncertain or changing, people fear the future. They want reassurance or support that all will be well. This is why many people use fear as a technique to control others. If they can keep you in fear mode, they can control you. Lies work, and why? Because we let them and don’t have the courage to challenge them. Ripple effect - The ripple effect is like an ocean wave. Ideas, lies, misrepresentations, etc. continue by the simple rule of endurance. Manipulation - People will often use their version of the truth to keep others in circumstances they can control. Just look at certain countries today with populations under siege and there seems to be nothing they can do to change them short of a revolution. Here’s a quick real-life example from my past. Many years ago, I spent the holidays with the family of a client and friend. We were talking one night and he asked me, “Tim, what do you think about reincarnation?” My answer, “I don’t know much; I just know I don’t believe in that hocus-pocus.” His response, “How can you have such a strong opinion about something you don’t know anything about?” I have never forgotten that conversation, and never will. So, what current truths do you believe are impacting your life or choices and decisions, and how do you define truth? In His service, Tim Tim Connor may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com Looking for Events? Click on this box in our online issue worldwidedrillingresource.com

Developing a Good Leader for your Crew Adapted from Information by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers Finding someone with the right skills to lead a crew can be challenging in the drilling industry. According to leadership expert Tery Tennant, who with his wife Linda, own Attainment Inc., a Phoenix-based consulting firm that helps successful people move to the next level; the first step is recognizing what a good leader actually is. “The measure of a good leader is how well their team functions without them,” he stated. New leaders can have a tough time letting go of day-to-day tasks they’ve grown accustomed to doing as an employee, but it’s necessary to delegate those tasks so the leader can focus on their own development. High-payoff activities (HPAs) change when you become a leader. HPAs are the six most important activities you should do for at least 80% of your work day. Once leaders identify their own HPAs, they will be able to help employees develop their own. “Recognize that efficient and effective are two different things,” Linda said. “Efficient is about getting everything done as quickly as possible. Effective is about getting the right things done. It’s important for a leader to get the right things on the task list.” When leaders fail, it’s typically due to one of the following issues: jUsing the power of the position rather than coaching jReactively putting out fires instead of proactively developing long-term solutions jMaking decisions employees should be making jMicromanaging employees rather than helping them develop jNot clearly communicating expectations jNot holding employees accountable for performance jNot providing effective performance feedback and training jAssuming what motivates them, will also motivate employees Another issue new leaders may experience is the struggle to shift from employee, to managing employees. A lot of times in the drilling industry, crews have worked together for years and have become friends. It’s a tough situation for a lot of people, but if authority is used correctly, the shift can be a smooth one. Here area some leadership tips for using authority effectively: 1. You don’t want to try to be an employee’s friend, but you don’t want to be the enemy either. Simply focus on getting the job done effectively. 2. Provide consistent feedback and coaching; this is how leaders improve their teams. Forget asking if you can provide some “constructive criticism”, all your employee will hear is the second word - criticism. Coaching is a more positive word because it’s about becoming better at your job and winning as a team. It’s also important to conduct your coaching and feedback privately, not in front of fellow crew members. However, it’s okay to publicly praise employees for a job well-done. In fact, public recognition is crucial to building a self-motivated team. 3. Follow through on your own commitments. This is how leaders build credibility and inspire their teams. “Leaders need a system to make sure that when they say they are going to do something, they follow through and do it,” Tery explained. 4. Finally, leaders must provide clear job expectations - in writing. “Then leaders can provide performance measurements, offer feedback, and hold people accountable,” Tery concluded. “When employees understand what is expected of them, that actually makes the leader’s job a lot easier.” 17 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® DECEMBER 2020 WWDRphoto. Woman-Owned Company Sets New Standards Adapted from Information by CONEXPO-CON/AGG Brex Enterprises, in Irwin, Pennsylvania, provides pipeline maintenance and services; earthwork and development; trucking and hauling; and right-of-way services. Founded in 2012 as Brentzel Excavation LLC, the company attributes its growth and success to a solid foundation, said Alicia Brentzel, president and co-owner with husband Andrew (A.J.). A.J. was working for a family member doing excavation when he decided to form his own excavation business. Gradually, the company moved into doing pipeline work for the gas and oil industry. By 2014, the company changed its name to Brex Enterprises. ‘Br’ for Brentzel and ‘ex’ for excavation. At the beginning of 2019, Brex Enterprises earned a Women Business Enterprise (WBE) certification from the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). It is a private third-party that certifies women-owned businesses on behalf of U.S. corporations or WBE certification through city, county, or state programs. One part of the company’s foundation is safety. All employees receive comprehensive annual training on all aspects of work from management. A company safety committee made of employees and managers meets every month to monitor and address safety-related issues. Being in the gas and oil industry comes with additional safety measures such as SafeLandUSA training - a standardized orientation training for workers in the U.S. onshore and gas exploration and production industries. In addition to meetings and e-mails, the company’s 40 employees are kept in the loop with a monthly newsletter which also features a Performer of the Month and a Safety Performer of the Month, chosen by the company’s foremen and leadership staff. The newsletter also discusses the status of current projects and upcoming projects so all employees know what is going on within the company, regardless of their position. Employees are periodically asked if they are happy in their position, if they want to learn new skills, what their goals are, and where they want to be in a year or two. “We are in an extremely competitive environment and can only do so much with monetary incentives,” Alicia explained. “Instead, we want to motivate people with such things as acknowledging they are a valuable member of the company, recognizing their hard work, and providing opportunities for improving their skill sets, and for growth advancement within the company.” The company doesn’t mind hiring employees with little or no experience. In fact, they believe hiring someone who lacks industry experience can be beneficial as they are able to be trained to do things the company’s way. All new employees are paired up with an experienced worker to help them quickly acclimate to the job and company . New employees are also moved around to different positions so they are able to perform different duties. “Employers typically do not want to hire inexperienced people and put the money up to train new people,” she maintained. “As an industry, if we do not start doing that, we are going to have a serious problem because the labor shortage is very real. In ten years from now, we are not going to have workers with experience and expertise in anything we do.” 18 DECEMBER 2020 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® G&O February Issue Deadlines! Owner, Qwater Well Developer and WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Hydrogeologist Using Electrical Resistivity Logs to Determine Well Screen Intervals Wells with screens set in permeable sand and gravel zones are probably the most common type of well completion used to obtain water samples or supply water for drinking purposes. Wells completed without screens into consolidated rock are another popular type of well completion when the formations are capable of maintaining an open borehole. This article discusses the drilling methods used to select the best producing zone while drilling by the mud rotary method. The mud rotary method circulates the formation drill cuttings back to land surface with the mud generated while drilling. The goal is to select a “water bearing zone” that will produce enough water to meet our needs. Screened zones are generally determined by observing the drill cuttings brought to land surface and observing the column of mud flow to and from the drill bit. Sometimes, it is difficult to determine if a formation is highly permeable or the formation is “above” the water table - and “dry”, which causes a “loss” of water and drilling fluid into the formation. Another tried-and-true method of determining relative permeability in a borehole is using wire line to measure electrical resistivity or formation resistivity. High formation resistivity is generally indicative of good water quality and relatively high permeability. Electrical resistivity logging generally involves lowering a lead electrode on a wire line which measures formation as the electrode passes by the formation. A low formation resistivity is indicative of low permeability and/or low water quality. Resistivity measurements are usually recorded on a paper graph, with depths, as the sonde is lowered into the borehole. The illustration shows representative responses to different conditions encountered in a sand and clay environment. 25 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® DECEMBER 2020 Choosing the Right Auger Tool Adapted from Information by Terex Utilities Selecting the right auger tool for your job can be challenging. Terex Utilities has created a video to help guide your decision, demonstrating the importance of selecting the right auger tool for the job conditions. Selection factors include auger style tools or barrel tools, various types of teeth, and multiple tool sizes. “With the right tool, you can reduce dig time, eliminate overheating, and improve productivity,” said Greg Adler, regional account manager for auger tooling. In the video, Terex Utilities performs a side-byside comparison of its TXC Auger and BTA Spiral with carbide bullet teeth drilling into concrete. The TXC is best for loose, compacted soils; stiff clays, shale, cobbles, and medium rock strata. It’s not designed for cutting through concrete or hard rock. In contrast, the BTA Spiral is efficient for drilling into hard rock and concrete. After about 12 minutes, there is a drastic contrast in the amount of work accomplished by the BTA Spiral. “Be sure to match the tool with the ground conditions. Most tool specifications will include a description of the type of applications for which the auger tool or barrel is designed. In addition, the type of teeth on the pilot bit is directly related to the application it’s designed to work in,” said Adler. He also recommends the pilot bit and flighting teeth are compatible, with the same strength and cutting characteristics. “Augers have flights to lift the spoils that are loosened by the teeth and a pilot bit that stabilizes the drilling process for a straight hole, while core barrels cut a single track applying more pressure per tooth, removing rock materials by lifting out the material as individual plugs,” said Dale Putman, product support manager. The second demonstration in the video is of the Terex Stand Alone Core Barrel, shows just that process in action. Terex is one of a select few companies which designs and builds both drills and auger tooling. Experience in projects around the world has provided the company with a unique understanding of what it takes to get the job done even in some of the most extreme conditions. C&G
26 DECEMBER 2020 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Nation’s First Offshore Wind Farm to use Directional Drilling Adapted from Information by National Grid National Grid and Ørsted have started mobilizing teams to work throughout this winter to replace limited segments of the Block Island Wind Farm and sea2shore transmission cables to achieve greater burial depths beneath the ocean floor. The effort includes replacing approximately 1700 feet of National Grid’s sea2shore submarine cable which carries electricity between Block Island and mainland Rhode Island, and approximately 3100 feet of Ørsted’s submarine cable carrying electricity from the Block Island Wind Farm to Block Island. The submarine cables were originally installed in the spring/summer of 2016. Since then, the cables have had problems with sediment coverage over the cables. After extensive due diligence, teams from Ørsted and National Grid determined the best approach is to reinstall these segments of the cables with new sections adjacent to where the existing cables sit now. Teams for both National Grid and Ørsted are staging equipment and barges to be used on the project. The cable landings will be constructed using horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a common procedure for submarine cables such as these, and a conduit will be installed for the new length of onshore cable, including a new access pit. “We’re confident in the solution we’ve developed to ensure the Block Island Wind Farm transmission cable remains buried deeply below the ocean floor,” said Mikkel Mæhlisen, head of operations, Ørsted North America, Offshore. HDD will bury the cables at a depth of 25-50 feet below the seafloor, compared with the current 4-6 feet. This should be deep enough to withstand changing ocean floor conditions and provide a continued reliable interconnection for Block Island and the Block Island Wind Farm for years to come. The new cables will be spliced onto the existing cable connecting the Island, the wind project, and the mainland. The existing portions of the exposed cables are scheduled to be removed at the end of construction. Block Island and Rhode Island will continue receiving electricity from the wind farm during construction, except for a brief outage in the spring, when the new cable will be spliced with the existing cable. Construction is expected to be completed before Memorial Day 2021. “As the first offshore wind farm in the nation, the Block Island Wind Farm remains an enormous source of pride for all of Rhode Island,” said Terry Sobolewski, president of National Grid Rhode Island. “Both National Grid and Ørsted have been working rigorously with the town and state and federal partners on an enduring plan to address burial depth, and even amidst the pandemic, we are on track to having it completed in time for next summer.” DIR
