They surely are and are being e-mailed to our Display and Marketing List as I prepare this well-known Page 6 for you. This issue, November marks a milestone for me - the BIG 73! Yes, as many of you know, I always say 1948 was a great year for me. I’m proud to have been part of your world for 26 years now as you have helped me in more ways than you can ever imagine. I sincerely thank each and every one of you. Our world is constantly changing and it seems it is changing in ways which make us unsure what will be in our futures. But rest assured, you are a strong group of down-to-earth, genuine people. No matter what tomorrow, next week, next month, or even the years to come thereafter bring, you are resilient and will be able to withstand the bad times and make the good times roll again. I have a question to pose to you for “pondering”. So, there is talk on the news in the United states of taxing every dollar over $600 you put into your bank account. Then the taxing continues again for every dollar over $600 USD you withdraw. Now mind you, the way I remember each time I prepare the payroll here at WorldWide, taxes are taken out of payroll checks here for the United States Government to spend on such things as keeping us safe, maintaining our “social security” monies so we have something when we cannot work anymore as we age; medicare to help with medical expenses as we age; and a whole bunch of other things for our own good. We are supposed to continue paying taxes on things we purchase for the states, cities, and towns we live in to improve roads, bridges, education, etc. So now these new taxes, if Washington gets its way, will be yet another tax against many things we have already paid taxes on. Does this seem right to you? It takes me back to the Tea Party Days ~ and seriously I feel like we are being taxed and yet have no representation. Now onto something happy ~ we have been receiving a great many compliments on this new style for WorldWide Drilling Resource®. After deciding to change it up to articles and display advertisements, I was standing at our kitchen counter looking through some magazines, and low and behold, every single one on that counter had articles and display advertisements. To find classified advertising, you had to find another publication somewhere. We have made it easy for you ~ they are put together in “one poly bag” for you, delivered safely. Enjoy! Little Helpers, Big Remediation Results Adapted from Information by BAUER AG Using many gigabytes of data, Friedrich Leifheit, site manager at the Bauer Umwelt division, creates images on his tablet that look like surreal works of art. These images are actually used to make a digital site model of the grounds of former gas works in Arnstadt, Germany. The grounds now contain nothing but piles of debris and the ruins of buildings. All other traces of an industrial history spanning over 70 years have already disappeared, except for environmentally hazardous materials such as tar, heavy metals, phenols, and hydrogen sulfide compounds still lurking deep underground. The Bauer Umwelt division of BAUER Resources GmbH, in collaboration with BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH was tasked with soil remediation of the site, including the construction of an excavation pit and groundwater treatment. Digital surveying of the site spanning more than two acres began by using a drone and rover rod. During its flight, the drone took hundreds of high-resolution images where objects can be distinguished down to fractions of an inch. The rover rod also enabled precise surveying to rapidly determine the cubic volume of debris, excavation pit volumes, and changes to the site. Using the images collected, 3D data were generated after the digital collection phase, then transferred to a digital site model. The result is true-to-scale, realistic photo representations of the entire site including fine details. Holger Kaiser, manager for building information modeling (BIM) and digitalization at BAUER Resources GmbH said, “The more precise and detailed data we have about a site’s condition, the more precisely the quantities can be calculated, and therefore also the expenditure required for a construction project. These little digital helpers make it possible, and also save us a lot of time.” Surveying work was followed by gradual excavation of three pits to a depth of approximately 11½ feet. In the process, more than 11,900 cubic yards of material were removed and disposed of, including approximately 16,000 tons of polluted soil and construction debris, as well as roughly 500 tons of soft tar. The foundations encountered were recorded in 3D on a tablet using surveying software, then forwarded to the BIM department at BAUER Resources to calculate volumes. After construction of the largest excavation pits, replacement boring was carried out with a diameter of nearly six feet to depths of almost 23 feet to remove the tar hotspot. For processing, the excavated soil was transported to the soil treatment center of the Bauer Umwelt division in Bleicherode. Polluted dripping water from the drilling process was treated using the established groundwater treatment system. Work will be concluded with construction of the last excavation pit followed by earthworks. This project is an example of a classic rehabilitation project characterized by an ambitious use of digital tools. Along with drones, rover rods, and tablets, the BAUER team also relied on digital tools for site documentation. Rather than using pens, paper, and cameras, the BAUER team recorded all relevant data, including tasks completed, personnel and equipment deployed, site images, and quality-related information using a construction diary web application. Using this approach, all construction diaries for the site were automatically collected and compiled. Leifheit said, “In this way, we can identify construction progress at a glance, review the work that has been performed, and adopt countermeasures or adjust the schedule in case of deviations. In addition, this information is available for all parties involved, around the clock, and from any location. This greatly facilitates and improves communication on the site.” 7 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Atlantis Vault • Self-Contained • Self Con • Simple installation • Trouble-free operation For more information call: (270) 786-3010 or visit us online: www.geothermalsupply.com The Bauer team relied on a digital construction diary for site documentation. 8 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Borehole Cleaning Part 2 of 2 by Ronald B. Peterson Drilling Products Specialist, Mountainland Supply Company If a drilling fluids professional uses a Fann model 280 field viscometer to measure some of the properties of the drilling fluid, he can use the numbers he generates to determine other drilling fluid properties such as Plastic Viscosity (PV), Yield Point (YP), and Gel Strengths. These are all significant properties in drilling: 1 Plastic Viscosity (PV) - Generally, the plastic viscosity is related to the size, shape, and number of particles in a moving fluid. It is an indication of the contribution to the fluids viscosity under dynamic flow conditions, of the entrained particles in the drilling fluid. PV is calculated using shear stresses measured at 600 and 300 with a Fann model 280 field viscometer. 1 Yield Point (YP) - The force or interaction exerted between the individual particles. Yield point is exhibited as the force required to initiate flow. YP is calculated using shear stresses measured at 600 and 300 with a Fann model 280 field viscometer. 1 Gel Strengths - The time-dependent measurements of a fluid’s shear stress under static conditions. Gel strengths are commonly measured after 10-second, 10-minute, and 30-minute intervals, but they can be measured for any desirable length of time. Plastic viscosity can be an indication of the density of the fluid. A higher number of solids entrained in the fluid will usually result in a higher drilling fluids weight. Yield point is an indicator of the suspension capability and the carrying capacity of the fluid. In general, the higher the yield point, the greater the capacity of the fluid to carry and suspend cuttings. A high yield point reduces the ability of the cuttings to settle out on the surface. In general, you want the yield point to be as low as possible and still maintain adequate suspension qualities in the borehole, with minimal suspension qualities in the pits. If you need to run a weighted fluid to control an artesian flow, then you will need a yield point of 12 to keep the weighting material in suspension. Gel strengths are the ability of the fluid to become thicker under static conditions, or when the fluid is not moving. Gel strengths help keep the cuttings in suspension. Generally, you want the gel strengths to be fairly low but progressive. One of the things that needs to be considered is it requires a force called shear stress to break the gels or gel strengths. This puts additional force on the borehole and can result in loss of returns. The best way to break the gels is to start rotating the drill pipe before you start the mud pump. This will minimize the impact on the borehole in starting circulation and reduce the chance WTR Peterson continued on page 30

9 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® GEFCO Celebrates 90th Birthday In the early 1900s, George E. Failing envisioned a drill rig to replace rigs that were not only cumbersome to erect, but also took at least a week to drill 50 feet. Determined to produce a portable, more efficient rig, Failing turned his vision into reality by mounting a drilling rig on the bed of a 1927 Ford farm truck. Failing’s idea is still the most productive way to drill water wells 90 years later. The George E. Failing Company was founded shortly after the design of the portable drilling rig in 1931, and became a leading manufacturer of water well and shallow oil well drilling rigs and equipment. Over time, and different ownership, The George E. Failing company became known as GEFCO. Today, GEFCO is owned and operated by BAUER Equipment America, and the GEFCO manufacturing facility was moved from its Enid, Oklahoma roots to Conroe, Texas in October 2020. This year, the company is celebrating the long-standing heritage and superior quality of the GEFCO drilling rig. In 90 years, thousands of GEFCO rigs have been delivered to various countries around the world. The GEFCO Team will be celebrating 90 years of excellence at Groundwater Week in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 15th and 16th. Their customers, family members, and friends are encouraged to stop by their booth in exhibit area #501 to help commemorate the company’s enduring success. 10 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Ground Penetrating Radar Technology Adapted from Information by Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. (GSSI) Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is also known as georadar and ground probing radar. The GPR system has three main components: a control unit, an antenna, and a power supply. The control unit contains the electronics which trigger the pulse of radar energy the antenna sends into the ground. It also has a built-in computer and hard disk/solid state memory to store data for examination after fieldwork. Some systems, such as the GSSI SIR 30, are controlled by an attached laptop computer with preloaded control software. These allow data processing and interpretation without having to download radar files into another computer. The antenna receives the electrical pulse produced by the control unit, amplifies it, and transmits it into the ground or other medium at a particular frequency. Antenna frequency is an important consideration. The higher the antenna frequency, the shallower into the ground it penetrates, detecting only smaller targets. Depending upon the application and desired depth penetration, the user should consider the antenna frequency needed. GPR equipment can be run with a variety of power supplies, ranging from small rechargeable batteries to vehicle batteries and normal 110/220-volt. Connectors and adapters are available for each power source type. Working by sending a tiny pulse of energy into a material and recording the strength and time required for the return of any reflected signal, the GPR method collects a series of pulses over a single area, a scan. The data collected is then placed together in the appropriate locations for computer processing in a specialized software program such as GSSI’s RADAN. The computer produces a horizontal surface, a depth slice, at a particular depth in the record. In many situations, the GPR operator will simply note the location of a target so it can be avoided, necessitating only the use of a simple linescan format to mark the approximate area of the target on the survey surface. Other users may need more detailed subsurface maps and depth to features, requiring more complex GSSI GPR processing software. While focus and concentration can be generally positive, viewing situations too narrowly may lead to an inability to consider all factors necessary to get a job done successfully. When constructing an actual tunnel, a team must have a different sort of “tunnel vision,” still focused, but with knowledge obtained through monitoring of many ongoing factors. The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), also known as the sequential excavation method in the U.S., first garnered recognition during tunnelling operations in the Austrian Alps. NATM is both a construction method and a design philosophy. The philosophy uses the geological stress of the surrounding rock mass to stabilize the tunnel structure itself. In other words, ground conditions drive the tunnelling operation. The same philosophy also emphasizes constant monitoring. It is an effective method where there are diversified geological conditions, making forecasting of the rock mass difficult due to rapidly changing geology because it works on the observation approach to control stability. Often referred to as a design-as-you-go approach, NATM could be better characterized as a design-as-you-monitor approach. Generally, the process involves letting the weak ground around the tunnel deform in a controlled way by applying a flexible rock support. Later, when the rate of displacement reaches a specified limit, the permanent rock support is installed, designed to withstand future loads. Actual construction operations usually include the following: j Profile marking by the survey team to maintain the minimum excavation line. j Working face drilling a pattern of holes. j Charging and blasting - inserting the explosives into the drilled holes and charging them. j Defuming to expel harmful gases after the blast - ventilation ducts and fans. j Mucking to remove material produced as a result of blasting. j Scaling and chipping to check for undercuts or loose material or cracks - remove with excavators or breakers. j Geological mapping to determine the types, number of joints, and type of rock conditions of the face. j Face sealing shotcrete as a protective layer applied on the face and periphery to avoid falling of loose materials. j 3D monitoring targets installation to check deformations inside the tunnel after the excavation. j Lattice girder erection to act as initial support and provide a defined shape to the tunnel. j Forepoling for additional support in the case of weak rock in the crown portion. j Shotcreting, either sealing shotcrete or main shotcrete, to prevent loose material falling and provide load support. j Rock bolting to stitch the shotcrete with the rock as one unit to support the whole burden. Versatility is an advantage of NATM technology as it can be used for hard rock, soft rock, and blended ground conditions. It offers flexibility to build tunnels of almost any size or shape; however, curvilinear (oval) is preferred to allow smooth stress redistribution. Other advantages are its ability to deal with locally unexpected ground conditions and the possibility of optimizing equipment and crews by allowing multiple concurrent heading operations. More economical support can be provided only as required by the encountered ground conditions rather than a one-size-fits-all support system designed for worst load case. NATM is not perfect as it requires much coordination, cooperation, and communication, as well as a higher technology requirement for monitoring, to compete with the other construction methods. Even at peak performance, NATM typically performs at a slower rate than other methods as the team adapts to changing conditions. For NATM to compete successfully, the operation must reduce interruptions in excavation and support work by closely working with all elements of the operation to assess and respond to the changing conditions. Thus, NATM’s broader vision of progress monitoring to inform construction is the key to successful completion for professionals choosing this tunnelling method. C&G

17 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Drilling Into Money Not Boring by Mark E. Battersby Uncle’s Fast-Expiring Helping Hand with Payroll Costs Fortunately, many drilling businesses are finding their efforts to offer higher pay and more benefits are helped by one of Uncle Sam’s often overlooked tax breaks. Thanks to the unique Employee Retention Credit (ERC), for example, many employers can get money back from the government through a credit against their payroll taxes. Geared toward small and midsize businesses, the ERC is designed to encourage businesses to keep employees on their payroll. In addition to having 500 or fewer employees, an employer’s eligibility is based on having gross receipts of less than 70% (versus the earlier 50% amount) compared to the same quarter in 2019. Thus, any drilling operation’s gross receipts that declined more than 30% in 2021, may be eligible for the credit. The credit remains at 70% of qualified wages up to a $10,000 limit per quarter producing a maximum of $7000 per employee per quarter - up to $28,000 per year for each employee. If the amount of the employer’s credit is more than its share of those payroll taxes owed for a given quarter, the excess will be refunded. A drilling operation can also claim this credit even if it is getting (or has already gotten) money from the Payroll Protection Program provided, of course, the same wages aren’t used in both the credit and forgiveness calculations. To qualify in the fourth quarter of 2021, the rules remain essentially the same as earlier. Eligible employers will report their total qualified wages and the related health insurance costs for each quarter on their employment tax returns (generally, Form 941) for the applicable quarter. If a reduction in the drilling operation’s employment tax deposits is not sufficient to cover the credit, some employers may receive an advance payment from the Internal Revenue Service by submitting Form 7200, Advance Payment of Employer Credits Due to COVID-19. In addition to expiring on January 1, 2022, wages paid to owners of either S Corporations or a regular corporation don’t count. That’s right, the ERC is not available for wages paid to a majority owner or such owner’s spouse - unless the majority owner has no brother or sister (whether by whole or half blood), ancestor, or lineal descendant, in which case wages paid that owner or owner’s spouse will qualify for the ERC. 18 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Last month, I decided to see how various organizations were managing the current economic and staffing challenges to ensure they survive and even prosper in the coming months. So, I decided to both interview and observe a variety of managers, business owners, and organization leaders, and I thought as we approach the end of a very challenging year, I would share some of the “idiotic” stuff I heard. These quotes say it all - if you don’t have time or the interest to read what follows. “Civilization begins with order, grows with liberty, and dies with chaos.” ~Will Durant “The battlefield is a scene of constant chaos. The winner will be the one who controls that chaos, both his own and the enemies.” ~Napoleon Bonaparte “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” ~Winston Churchill So, here are a few of the things I heard. And for your information, I didn’t make any of this stuff up . . . it all happened. • One manager, during a staff meeting, openly criticized one of the employees in front of all of the others in the room. • One business owner said they were eliminating the Employee of the Month recognition program because it was taking too much time and was a distraction. • One entrepreneur who had over 100 employees, said they were going to change the yearly employee review process to every other year. • One manager decided employees working remotely were hurting their organization’s performance so they decided everyone had to return to working on-site regardless of their position. • One organization created a new policy that all coffee in all departments was now going to be $.50. • One “so-called” leader recommended himself as the manager of the year to the Board of Directors. • One organization eliminated all in-person training and said everything would be done by Zoom or webinar. Don’t believe some of this stuff???? I can go on for pages, and you wouldn’t believe some of the idiotic things people are doing and saying and then wondering why their business is on shaky ground. Okay, one more that will blow your mind: • One organization changed the working hours to whatever was convenient for everyone. Come in when you can, leave when you want, take lunch breaks as long as you want, etc. = Billy Bob, on the road. Billy Bob Contact him via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com

19 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Count to Ten to Save a Life Adapted from Information by Major Drilling Group International Inc. Major Drilling is one of the world’s largest drilling services companies; primarily serving the mining industry and providing a complete suite of drilling services, including surface and underground coring, directional, reverse circulation, sonic, geotechnical, environmental, water well, coalbed methane, shallow gas, underground percussive/longhole drilling, surface drill and blast, and a variety of mine services. The company owns more than 600 rigs with over 2500 employees who excel at specialized drilling. Last year, the company introduced a new Critical Risks Management (CRM) initiative across all branches of its worldwide operations. Because safety is a foundational part of any successful drilling operation, the new initiative is taking prevention strategy to new levels. Part of the foundation for the CRM program is 10 Lifesaving Rules. Every critical risk identified has a set list of critical controls. When employees encounter a critical risk during their shift, they must stop and complete the corresponding critical control checklist. The company’s 10 Lifesaving Rules highlight serious risks and controls allowing employees to prevent serious injuries. These rules are incorporated into the induction training, reinforced with staff on a regular basis, and placed on all jobsites: 1. Watch out for my fellow workers. 2. Wear fall protection while working at heights. 3. Lock out and check for remaining energy before beginning any maintenance or repair. 4. Arrive and remain fit for duty while at work. Avoid impairment from fatigue, alcohol, and/or drugs. 5. Not remove or bypass any guard, safety device, or procedure. 6. Not attempt a task unless I am trained, competent, and authorized. 7. Use the company’s TAKE 5 risk assessment to reduce risk for myself and my team. 8. Wear my seat belt at all times while traveling in vehicles. 9. Keep my hands out of crush points and stay clear of any suspended rods, tools, or leads. 10. Avoid any distractions while driving. When a critical risk such as working at heights creates a fall risk, the CRM program points a worker to the critical control, such as using a safety harness, to mitigate the risk of serious injury on the job. In the illustration, the yellow triangles alert to the risks, which point to the circles in the blue area, advising the mitigation strategies to prevent accidents. Major Drilling reported 7 million lost time incident-free hours, and they credit their safety training and management system for this. As a result, their crews are well-trained, dedicated employees who know safety excellence occurs when every employee understands their right and responsibility to work safely every day. EXB The WWDR office will be closed on November 25th to give our employees time to enjoy their families. Limited staff will be available on November 26th. The staff and management of WWDR wish you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving Weekend.

20 NOVEMBER 2021 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Improved Safety with a Mining Tablet Adapted from Information by Anglo American and Maptek A technological mining innovation developed by a woman is a step in the right direction for added safety in mines. Larnie Mackay, Anglo American’s underground digital transformation lead with more than 25 years’ experience in the mining industry, was recognized as the winner of the first Maptek Technological Innovation Award at the 2020 Women in Resources Awards. Mackay was recognized for pioneering development of the, first and so far only, electronic tablet device certified for unrestricted use in underground coal mining in Australia. Mackey responded to the honor: “I’m proud to have been recognized for a project that has been a passion of mine for a long time, and that I know will have an impact on our industry into the future.” The new tablets have been deployed across Anglo American’s underground metallurgical coal operations in Queensland. Launching a new era of digitization for the mining industry, these devices capture and share real-time safety, production, and environmental monitoring information. Mackay commented on the groundbreaking advance: “Our underground tablets have changed the way we work. They’re giving our underground coal mine workers access to all of our safety information at their fingertips, helping improve communications by providing the ability to make calls to the surface whenever assistance is required, supporting the digitization of our operations, and removing paper forms, which assists in Anglo American’s sustainability roadmap.” Development was a considerable challenge, taking around five years and involving extensive work with mining engineers and manufacturing partners to ensure the product was fit-for-purpose and passed an extensive certification process. “It has been a culture and technology game changer at our underground mines, and the way it has been embraced by our teams - especially those underground - has been phenomenal.” She continued, “This project has definitely been a ride of emotions but a project I would do all over again in a heartbeat.” Committed to continual improvement, Mackay has already pushed the boundaries. The first underground tablet weighed five pounds, but the next generation version is slightly less than two pounds. With regards to ergonomics, this is a phenomenal improvement for miners. Mackay encouraged young women and men to take advantage of the opportunities available in the sector: “There are a wide range of future-focused opportunities available in the mining industry, and I encourage anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in technology to consider what our industry can offer.” Larnie Mackay with electronic tablet.
